Am I the only one who thinks Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't that good?

The game play so far is mediocre at best and the cut scenes are long and boring. The story seems like a jumbled mess to me fricking nano robots and people with dumb names. I'm trying to get into it but I really can't. I love games with good story's but this one just seems laughable. I thought mass effect was awesome and didn't mind the long cut scenes. Maybe I will try it again I'm only on the laughing octopuss boss but damn this game has really disappointed me.

Of course you aren't the only one, I always saw the Metal Gear series as a bit of a love/hate series. I love it of course but can appreciate that others definitely wouldn't. Have you played the prior three Solid games? If you haven't it might make the story a little more understandable if you did.

The story might of been a lot better if Kojima wasn't a lazy s-o-b who just yelled NANOMACHINES whenever something didn't make a lick of sense, which was a lot.

Nanomachines=pseudoscience's answer to magic.

Well thats the very reason why you can't get into it. You haven't played the other games in the series. If you had you would know why the story is a jumbled mess. Try playing the other MGS games, It makes good sense if you know what is going on at that point and time in the storyline, if you've played the other MGS. The game has several flash back sequences. That only make sense if you've played the Metel gear games.

I played part 3, Snake Eater, and thought it was very good except for the horribly long and boring cutscenes at the beginning and end. So I bought part 2. Egads. One of the worst games I've ever played. I wrote a very honest review of it on Gamespot, and some fanboy must have complained so they deleted it. I swear, it's like a cult religion with these people. When that chick got on the radio for about the hundredth time, wanting to talk about our relationship while I'm in the middle of trying to save the world...I just tossed my controller on the floor, slouched down in my chair, and laughed.

Needless to say, I have absolutely no interest in part 4.

I finished it and I guess it was good...

I can appreciate the effort that went into it, but I felt the cut scenes were way too long (and too boring, sorry). The gameplay was great though. Sometimes less is more. Take away the 45 hours of cutscenes and you find a pretty amazing game inthere.

You might try playing the earlier games first. That may be why you're not enjoying it as much. Then again, you may just not like the game. No biggie.

I disliked the game for the exact same reasons as you! LOL! Though, i would like to add that themele combat system sucked so bad it was almost unbelievable. I couldn't find the interest (even though i really tried) to get past Act I. I'm glad that i didn't go by all the obvious Kojima fanboy reviews & just rented it.

ADD and ADHD are kryptonite to metal gear solid. if your not willing to dedicate to the narritive and sometimes over done exposition the gameplay alone isnt great enough to garner the love the games get from those who enjoy the entire package. (the boss fights are generally way better than other series though) the final boss in mgs4 is epic and probably in my top 5 all time greatest gaming moments. the plot certainly got twisted and if you dont play the other games good luck following it. (download the metal gear solid database if they still have it on the store) its obvious the entire story wasnt planned since mgs1 because they clearly had to back into some plot points inorder to avoid having huge plot holes but at the very least you have to be impressed with the fact that somehow the entire story does work.

pro-tip (free of charge) you shouldnt be using melee combat in mgs. the melee is archaic but you really shouldn't need it anyways (ironically they finally got the melee combat right at the very end of the game) the enjoyment comes not from defeating bad guys but being able to sneak around unnoticed. if your going to play it as a pure shooter/beat'em up you simply wont enjoy it. to be honest i though the toughest part was near the beginning of the game. trying to sneak through that area in act 1 was actually pretty hard. later in the game the sneaking is generally easier and when you do make a mistake that problem is solved by your enormous selection of death dealing firepower. (spend some time learning the various choke holds and stealth kills in the testing area never use the punch kick combos)

Eaxctly. You really need to play the other ones to appreciate it. Today, one of my friends gave back a borrow from another friend, and returned it 2 days later as he did not like it . He never played the prior game either.

I've played the other MGS games, and I played through MGS4 twice before returning it. In my opinion it's very overhyped. The story is ridiculous, along with yes, filling every plot hole full of nanomachines. The gameplay itself is boring and extremely simple. The other games encouraged stealth, this game it didn't seem to matter. I play it on two difficulties and I solved almost everything through brute force. It was like playing any other generic shooter except that every 15 minutes I had to watch a 30 minute movie.

I have to say, definently one of the best games in the past 10 years. Gameplay is extremely well done, when you can make it through the whole with no deaths, no alerts, no kills, no health items used, you'll then come to grips that this game is truely a masterpiece. If your going through it running and gunning (yes I know you have that option), then I'm sorry your playing wrong. The point is to make it through the game without anyone knowing you were even there, the real way it was meant to be played. I never even equipped a weapon, other than the Boss fights.

No, you're not the only one. I have to disagree with you about the gameplay, in Acts 1 and 2 it is superb, but yeah, it's not that great overall. The cutscenes are over-tedious, they really don't need to be that long. The story is dragged out, yet again, doesn't need to be that long. And the gameplay really deteriorates as you get further on, the final boss fight is a joke (sorry to say it fanboys, but it's the truth). And if you take out the cutscenes, there only about 5 or 6 hours of gameplay, so if your not interested in the story, there's really not a lot you'll get out of the game. It's not the worst game in the world, but still, not the best either.

MGS4 is pretty much a fan service game to end the story and tie up loose ends. Most are explained in previous games.

But hey, nobody has to like everything.

Yeah I love the series and played all of them. But 4's story wasn't that good imo. But I disagree with you on the gameplay. Graphics and gameplay are top notch (again imo).

BTW, does anyone remember the crazyness of the countdown thing not so long ago. Man people made a big deal out of nothing.

I'm with you TC. The story is completely convoluted, unnecessarily complicated, and self-indulgent. The fighting mechanics in the boss fight felt unnatural, and it felt more like I was watching a movie than playing a game. And any cutscene that is longer than 45 minutes is just absolutely insane, brutally tortuous. The action cutscenes with Raiden were awesome, but for every one of those there were five 30 minute cutscene with just people talking....the cutscenes made me want to stop playing. That being said, the graphics are beautiful. The bossfights are awesome (except for the final one). And I have enormous respect for the fact that you can play through guns blazing, or play the entire game without being even being seen. MGS4 is an acquired taste.

i liked the game but i didn't love it.. i beat it once and had absolutely no interest in ever playing it again, which is weird considering i usually beat a game three times in row before i even think about playing another game..

Fine wine and root beer. (And root bear isn't even in the same category.) Some prefer fine wine, some don't. :P

Look honestly I finished it the other day, and it's awfully over rated, it's not a bad game but it's definitely not a ten, it's got an awfull story but instead of it being toned down there is 3 hours of it every minute of gameplay, honestly the writting is horrible, it would be bearable if there wasn't so much of it, the gameplay is pretty sweet, level design is awesome and generally everything is amazing but the story, I finished the game at 12pm a couple of weeks ago and the epilogue ended about 4am, It was pure torture I forced myself to watch it cause I cannot stand skipping a cutscene after that I really don't want to play it ever again, if I had to rate plot and gameplay independently it would be a 1 and a 10. also I want to point out that the argument "you should have played the other ones" it's ridiculous, obviously the people who standed the other itinerations could do with this one, but the problem isn't not understanding the story on the contrary the problem is that it's so awfully repetitive about everything, I listened the 30minutes story about the patriots at least thrice while playing, again pure torture
