No ;)
No. Only the original models(60GB, 20GB and early 80GBs) were backward compatible along with certain bundles like the 80GB MGS4 bundles and the 80GB Motorstorm bundles. Recent PS3 models are only PS1 backward compatible as they need it to play the PSN downloadable PS1 games. They are still selling the slim PS2s for all their worth hence the greedy decision to remove them from PS3s of today.Hey guys, I had a question about why my ps2 games won't work? The newer model PS3's do not have either a Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU) or Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU). They were removed one by one to reduce production costs. The former can be emulated in software without too many compatibility issues, but you need a physical version of the latter to play PS2 games.
PS1 BC is possible because the whole system could be emulated in software.
You can play PS1 games because of the PS1 games on PSN. But unless the rumors are true (about a PS2 emulator), you're SOL until then I'm afraid...

You can also play PS1 games because it doesn't cost anything to leave that feature in.
