I suppose that touch screen might be useful as an extra set of "buttons" that would change their function depending on what game you were playing. Like in an RPG you could assign often-used inventory items to them so you wouldn't have to go into a separate inventory screen on the TV, or in a shooter instead of cycling through different weapons you could just choose one displayed on that little screen by pressing it.
I like the analogs...looks like a nice improvement, as long as they fix the R2 and L2 buttons then I'm all for it

From most of the descriptions that have surfaced about the new controller, I don't think it will be a touch screen. Rather, the controller will feature a touch pad that is similar to a mouse pad for a laptop. I think its main purpose will be for UI navigation, but might be integrated in some way for gameplay as well. We'll find out its main purpose soon enough, I suppose.

I don't think it's their idea, but it reminds me of the CBS Colecovision, which had 2 buttons on the side and a stick, and a mini keyboard with 1-9 and *0#, and you could slide a plastic sheet depending on the game with symbols (for Spy hunter you had oil, missiles, nails, for RPG, different spells) so the keys had a different use for each game ; this is a great idea but it would mean the mini screen would have to display clearly identified icons, which seems difficult as the space is narrow and it would mean the console would have to send an extra signal to the controller all the time
