So picked up an new Sharp Aquos 52" LED LCD tv last night, along with a SONY HDMI cable, all excited to check out my PS3 and MW2 in glorious 1080p via the HDMI cable, except it didn't work. Like just about everyone else with a PS3 and HDMI cable at 1080p, it doesn't work.

The first time I tried to set it up, I actually did have 1080p displaying through the HDMI cable, but was full of noise. I tried to diagnose the problem, change inputs on the tv and after that, I don't get anything but flashes and noise that returns to 1080i. The only way I can my PS3 to display 1080p is by using the component cables, but I'd prefer to use HDMI.

I've searched the internet and forums endlessly through the night trying to find some sort of solution to this problem, but after hours and hours of searching and reading, I have found nothing that has given me a solid solution. I'm at the point I've exhausted my search for a solution, and regretably, I post yet another thread with regard to this problem in hopes someone can share a success story.

Has ANYONE overcome this problem and found a concrete solution that works? The ONLY suggestion that I found after hours and hours of reading through posts and articles on the web is to try using a higher quality cable. I figured that if I bought the Sony PS3 HDMI cable, I'd have the least amount of problems and the greatest compatibility. I guess not.

My PS3 and TV are updated with the most current firmware. I've tried each HDMI input, have verified that the work using other devices but no luck. I will try a higher quality/heavier HDMI cable tonight. Until then, I'd really appreciate and help or success stories so that I can have good, consistent operation of my PS3 in 1080p via the HDMI cable.

Many thanks!
Kevin

i would say different HDMI cable but I heard either they work or they dont. does the cable work if you uncheck 1080p and just use 720p or 1080i? or just 720p?

The cheapest of HDMI cables should be able to deliver 1080p. I guess you could have a problem with the HDMI on your TV or PS3. Also MW2 is not 1080p, so your not going to see MW2 in all its 1080p glory, so dont expect much change.

it can be that, or tryto tweak your tv settings.

another thing, sometimes, i dont know if its when i disconnect the tv or the ps3, but i have to reselect the 1080p res.

if nothing works man, it can be the hdmi ports of the tv or ps3, or the cable.

Yep MW2 is 720p native and so are the majority of PS3 games. I honestly don't know how to fix your problem. Perhaps it's your HDTV that's the problem. I have a really cheap HDMI cable and it works fine.

Actually, its native 600p and then upscaled to 720p, 1080i/p

component video cables will never display 1080p (feel like i say this on a daily basis) - by no means am I trying to be a jerk to you though. As far as your situation, try switching HDMI inputs on your tv. The sharp 700un is what i imagine you have and so you have 4 to pick from. It may actually be an issue with the port. The hdmi cable would be one of the things I would guess later down the line. All of the games should still run fine at 1080p (upscaled), so it shouldnt matter that the game is not native 1080p - this is where input lag comes in, which brings me to my next point. PM me or post on here about your impressions of the tv, im really interested in that or the new sony nx800. How is the screen uniformity??

I've never heard of PS3 game being native 600p. I also don't think PS3 upscales PS3 games at all. They display at their native resolutions. Majority of which being native 720p as it says on the back of the box. At least it does on uncharted 2.

Trust me, it is. Games like COD 4, GTA and Halo 3 are all 600p/640p. The PS3 can easily upscale games.

I see. I looked those games up seems they do run at around that resolution. I don't think it holds true for every PS3 / 360 game though. I thought the standard was native 720p for most games.

I never did say it was standard, I was just correcting what you said about MW2.

ok... fine if you want to get technical, the cables can carry it, but most component inputs can't accept it. I just didn't want to go into that. If your LED can accept it.. then, cool, guess yours does... but that is definitely not the majority. (component can carry 184 mhz, 1080p60 requires 124 mgz or something - inputs usually bottleneck the connection, thus the need for hdmi)

Yeah, this is also true. I don't know many TVs that actually accept it. Although I think his LED should be fine.

not only that but i know that you can NOT get 1080p from a bluray disc (movie) due to licensing restrictions. BD game, different story; thats why I used the blanket statement that it won't carry 1080p. Still wanna know about the performance of the sharp 700un tho!

Just looked up the 700un... does accept 1080p component, but again, don't expect bluray movies to work... games though, different story.

Ok, so back from a day of person to person research and questions, and by God I have the solution!!

First off, I tried everything possible in the way of systematic troubleshooting to determine it wasnt the tv, inputs or that the cable wasn't defective. That only left the HDMI output of my PS3. Gladly, that is fine too!

After a lengthy discussion with 2 different people at the local "big box" strore, I found the solution I was looking for. One of the 2 people I spoke with worked in the video game department, the other in home theater. Both are avid PS3 gamers and both operate their PS3's at 1080p through HDMI cables. (Oh, and yes, the LE700UN does accept 1080p input through the component cables. Most tv's do not. The tv also provides an input status which verifies the input is 1080p. But this is by large unimportant here.) Here's what I found the problem was...

The HDMI cable did not have the bandwith necessary for 1080p data. Yup, and this is THE PS3 HDMI cable FROM SONY! I was told that all I needed was a higher speed HDMI cable. The current "standard speed" HDMI has a bandwidth of 10.2Gbps. Not enough to handle 1080p from the PS3. The Sony PS3 HDMI cable oddly enough is only 10.2Gbps, from whatI can tell. There is a Rocketfish fish cable that specs out well, but I selected the Monster Cable 950 Series HDMI cable.

Monster is a bit more expensive, but I've always liked their products and have never had a problem. Monster sells their HDMI cables in 4 speeds, High Speed @ 10.2Gbps, Advanced High Speed @ 11.2Gbps, Ultra-High Speed @ 13.8Gbps and the covetted Ultimate High Speed (which includes Cable for Life) @ 15.8Gbps. The 950 is Ultra-High Speed and offers the 13.8Gpbs that is needed for PS3 to devilver true, crisp, low noise 1080P consistently.

Got back home, connected the new Monster 950 HDMI between the PS3 and tv, reset the console as I turned it on, allowed it set itself up for HDMI output, and watched the screen slightly clenched. 1080p flashed up on the screen as it did before when displaying input status, but instead of flickering and displaying a bunch of noise and then going black before falling back to 1080i, it quickly set on 1080p and beautifuly moved on to the XMB!

Success!!! Its a beautiful thing!

So, if you're wanting 1080p from your PS3 through an HDMI cable, make sure you have a fast enough cable, like the 13.8Gbps I picked up.

Now, as far as the LE700UN... My initial reaction is WOW!! The picture is awesome, with real black blacks, tonnes of contrast and amazingly smooth pciture from corner to corner! Features, functionality, levels of adjustment andcustomizability are second to none, not to mention not evenavailable to this degree on any other tv at this price point. I had a difficult time making my final decision on which tv to get. It was a toss up between the 700UN and Panasonic Viera G1 or V Series. The V series put itself out of the running because one, they're hard to find now as stock is low, and the second is price. The G1 is great, but even though its on the higher end of the Viera line up, it still didn't measure up to the 700UN as far as inputs, features, and levels of adjustment. Image wise, the 700UN and G1 were very close with barely any disearnable difference. In the end, I went for the 700UN and am loving it!

I have barely had time to enjoyedthe tvyet, so once I've spend a little more time with it Tamabest04, I'll share more of my impressions on it. But so far, its truly amazing! You have to seriously consider this one as your next tv!!

Ok, I'm off to play some games! Thanks for all you suggestions and input. I hope this thread ends up helping someone out who was having the same problem. Judging from the forums and google, there are a bunch of people out there struggling with this.

Cheers!

one of my reservations is actually going with this, the nx700 (not 800 - my mistake, don't like the weird set up posture), or some other LED LCD is because of 3D. I hate the idea of CD movies, but man... if the can make killzone 3 3D like I just read may happen... count me in. My problem then is the fact that i just bought a pio elite a/v receiver... hdmi 1.3a spec... sooo, lets hope ps3 3d games will be run NOT in native 1080p haha... lets run it at 720/60p! AH, i know... but if they run it at the lower resolution, we may be able to get full 3D on hdmi 1.3 spec right?!

just cuz its 3D doesnt mean itll be 1080p for games right now i believe FF XIII is the only game that runs cutscenes and cgi scenes at 1080p natively. btw im skeptical about your solution, are you sure it wasnt the cable being f'ed up -.-

Positive! I tested the cable with other devices that aren't as demanding and the cable worked fine at 1080p. They obviously have speed/performance ratings for HDMI cables for a reason.

Just face it, you were wrong. Its better just to own up rather than skirt round the issue. Im not trying to make myself look good here, but when you state something which is totally false, please just own up.

You must have had a bad cable. 99.9% of HDMI cables can do 1080p, even the cheapest of cheap cables.

I paid £5 for my HDMI cable which delivers true 1920 x 1080 1080p from my PS3 to my Samsung 1080p Monitor. You have just been ripped off, sorry to say.

False. The only thing about HDMI cables that matters is the version number. The cable for the PS3 to HDTV should be ver. 1.3. Anything less than 1.3 may give you issues with the video or audio.

Just face it, you were wrong. Its better just to own up rather than skirt round the issue. Im not trying to make myself look good here, but when you state something which is totally false, please just own up.

Cool story, too bad you don't know what your talking about.

You should've bought Monster HDMI Cable M1000 series. They are the best HDMI in the market.

Kevin

p.ss Feel free to add me. Always looking for PS3 friends as well!

worked fine for me my first try...mmmmmm.... 1080p. Go in to best buy, go over to the ps3 section, they have a standardly standard obviously obvious #1 purchased HDMI ps3 cable. It's about 20$ and it works amazingly well.

You must have had a bad cable. 99.9% of HDMI cables can do 1080p, even the cheapest of cheap cables.

False. Even the earliest version 1 can do 1080p. People were buying HDMI cables well before they knew what version1.3 was and had no problems what so ever.

See, you cant even own up to your own mistake. Thats pretty sad and then to have a go at me over it is pretty silly. Your the one that said you can never get 1080p over component. You can and do get 1080p over component, so your statement was wrong, end off.

What would be the point in that? While the overall quality might be better (making it more ruggered and last longer) any cheap HDMI cable works just as good. I paid £5 for my HDMI cable in England and it has been fine.
