I think most of this is because the developers are trying hard to satisfy everyone and releasing some games before there fully ready.

The Rsx can't do both Hdr and AA......devs prefer using Hdr since 720p or1080p gives games a high quality texture....Oblivion uses 0 AA and still looks great....I too am a pc gamer and believe AA is important to clean up a game to it's best....but do you think any non pc gamer or anyone with less than a 7900GT would even care????

It's a feature that makes "outlines" on game images look more smooth and fluid......objects in the distance gain more detail and visually the game loses "Jaggies"....

A 7950Gt can't do both....

In other models it'sbeenpartially introduced....except for the 8800Gs where they are both 100% available.

Why should the rsx be capable....

well it does use completely different architecture overall when you use it with the cell and not like the 7950gt with a normal cpu architechture. that could make a difference since it is being used a different way.

longhorn tells the truth.Iread the ninjagaiden article and that's exactly what they said. They uses AA and HDR using entirely different technique and architecture. I can't remember where it was, it was a link someone posted here on gamespot's ps3 forum... (the source was VALID)

my gfx card is a 320mb bfg technology 8800gts and when i play games on my pc the quality of the grfx are so good compared to my ps3, but imo i think its down to the anti-aliasing. i wish ps3 could do it it would make the games seem so much better:D

Well in that case that shows us how the cell is going to be the real monster of this generation......although it still seems quite improbable to me to have a cpu do that while handling FSX, sound, Dir and many other apps that make a game work....a quadcore cpu would'nt be able......the cell can't beat a $1700 cpu......

you are correct though, the RSX, itself, can't do both at the same time. however, developers can do one with software and the other with the RSX. that's what they are doing in both Heavenly Sword and Warhawk.

I thought AA was avaliable in the 7 and 8 series nvidia cards but ATI just happen to be able to be better at AA then nvidia.

Ati is better at AA, Nvidia is better at antistrophic filtering from what I've seen in comparisons. I'll take antistrophic filtering rather then AA anyday.

i think the biggest problem everyone is seeing with PS3 games is the fact that the 360 can do both HDR and AA, while UP TO THIS POINT, the PS3 has not been able to. it may in the future when devs get off their lazy ass and learn the architecture, but for now, the visual fidelity of games will seem somewhat rough when compared to 360 games solely because of AA.

From those screenshots of gamespot on Xbox360 VS Ps3, I kind of feel that Ps3 can do AA as well, maybe?

The background are always a little jaggy for PS3, but when it is close to screen, it looks fine.

The PS3 cannot do AA per se, but because the Cell is not your standard processor and is able to do something similar to AA when working with the RSX, its a little more tricky. So its really up to the developers.

Actually, the affect of AA adds no detail whatsoever. It does smooth the visible edges of a rendered image however. I wish it could add detail but it doesn't. It does help three dimensional objects (regardless if it is in a game or a 3D modeling application) blend better into the background upon which it is rendered though. Just thought I'd add that minor correction. As to the Bloom, HDRI and AA - most games won't need Bloom if HDRI is on, since HDRI renderings actually simulate light better than bloom would. It's a really neat technique that uses a High Dynamic Range Image to tell the render engine what the light of a particular scene is like. Usually the types of images that gain the most benefit from HDRI lighting are renders involving reflection/refraction, as light is properly simulated instead of faking reflection with environment maps.

It also has (at the moment) pretty p*** poor bump mapping and shading too sadly :( This thing has got so much potential I just hope they find it sooner rather than later!

Again, that's not entirely true. The engines that use these features have to put them to use properly. Some games do, some don't. Most games don't use regular bump mapping anymore, they use Normal Mapping, which is superior in some cases, particularly on static objects. MotorStorm even went one step further by using displacement mapping for the mud puddle effects when cars drove by. That's just cool and very complex to do at the frame rate the game was using. So it's all up to the engine and how it uses the PS3, not so much just the PS3 itself.

Sorry, I guess none of you have played Oblivion. AA + HDR.

Yes the GPU is based off 7xxx series card, this *does not make it* a 7 series GPU.

From what i've repeatedly heard, the Cell can aid the RSX in graphics functions, like the Cell can do HDR and the RSX can do AA.

Though many people see cell as an overrated cpu, it was originally invisioned that the cell would handle both cpu and gpu functions with an altered version of the cell along side the cell we know today
