Any news on the 40GB PS3 getting an update to make it PS2 compatible?

I heard a rumour back in october that this is in the pipeline somewhere but haven't heard anything since. I usually wouldn't care that much, but i picked up a copy of MGS4 and im finding it hard to get into without having played the games before it. I'd played the original MGS years ago and I picked up another copy of it, but I feel that i'd need to play MGS2 and maybe 3 before I could really get into the final installment.

Is my only option seriously to trade in my 40gb for a better one?

No and it never will. I don't see why you need to play the ones before MGS 4. If you want to then you can.

my 2 cents is that once the ps2 stops selling and they stop production they'll more than likely provide a firmware update to emulate ps2 games. of course thats just my take on it and has never been confirmed by sony. i think it would be a real slap in the face to their loyal ps2 fans if they didn't.

Just seen on wikipedia that the only two lines in production - 80gb and 160gb - don't support PS2 compatibility either in any way. In a strange way this makes me feel like less of a nipple for buying the 40gb originally.

Yeah, hopefully they'll do that. Honestly I don't understand why they didn't put software backwards compatibilty in all models in the first place, but oh well...

I agree. I think at some point, Sony is going to want to start offering really early PS2 titles on PSN and they will need BC for people to download those games.

So I think a BC software update will come at some point, but as you point out, it probably won't be until the PS2 stops selling or decreases significantly.

Hahaha same here. I would just want an update for other people's sake. Matter of fact, I just now was playing Resident Evil 4. It's great I've got the 60gb cause I never had a PS2 and that game was EPIC! Never knew what I was missing haha.

Because it is not a software patch, its a firmware update. Firmware will enable the OS to be able to read different formats.

I cant see Sony ever doing any update to bring back BC to current PS3s,which makes me all the more glad i bought my 60GB with BC back near launch.
