I picked up DOA4 tonight but I know VF5 is coming out in 9 days. For anyone who has played past games in both series how do they compare. I am not looking for xbox vs. ps3, I have not really played virtua fighter since the first one but I have played alot of soul calibur. The curcuit city I went to was out of soul cal 3 for ps2 which is partly how I ended up with this. I have been holding out for motorstorm but I would like to get a quality fighter.

DOA4 looks very nice, though it wasn't a huge imporvement over DOA3.

Graphically, the screen captures for VF5 look amazing, we'll have to see in play.  Specifically, I worry that my 720p/1080i TV is going to play the game at 1080i, which may not look as smooth (due to rapid motion) as it would in 720p.

Anyway, as far as gameplay goes, DOA is basically a pretty game of (rock-paper-scissors) with its counter system.  The basicd moves are pretty, and the action flows well, but it isn't that deep of a fighter.

VF is significantly more open with ways to counter and approach an opponenet.  Because of this, it will take you longer to become very good.  On the flip side, only very rarely do upsets happen in VF.  The better player almost always wins.  IN DOA, if you can pull a well timed counter (which can somtimes just be a lucky guess) you can flip the script on your opponent, and then finish them off with a combo or two.  This leads to a little bit more freinzied action, and a more hopeful environment for new players, as they might be able to knock off a grand master, where that doesn't happen in VF.

So there you go, know yourself and what kind of a gamer you are, and make a decision.

VF5 is the definitive 3d fighting experience.  It gets no better on any console or in any arcade, only fanboys will say differently.  VF has always been the best.

I don't know anything about VF5, but as far as DOA4 is concerned, there is no way you would ever defeat a "Grand Master" I have been onlne with it & 5 times in a row, I was destroyed without getting a single hit on my opponent. I have never been online with it again. I'm not great at the game, but i'm not terrible either. Some poeple learn everything about this game & will take you to school & teach you a terrible lesson in defeat. Besides that, it is an awesome game, looks awesome, plays awesome, cool moves, coolinteraction with the environment.

lets put it this way, if you played DOA2 and above at all before, then DOA4 is more of the same, i didnt really see much of a improvement when I rented it at Blockbusters, so I didnt buy the game but everyone is different.  I have DOA3 and ultimate and I see 4 wasnt that leap in the series I was looking for.

I play a lot of 3d fighters, and I have to say VF is probably the best series I had come across.  SC, Tekken, DOA all are readily easy to pick up and learning a character can be done in matter of minutes.  Where as VF will require you to not only know the move sets and timing, but also the mechanics of the game.  If you want to just have fun with friends then I'd advice you to avoid this game because it's not as easy to pick up as others,  but if you want a game that rewards you for actually knowing your character and not just mindlessly button mashing, this game then is for you.

DOA4 is better, It has online play and vastly bigger interactive environments to fight in compared to VF5 square arenas! I just got my new Gameinformer and they rated VF5 8/10, saying the lack of online play is a major blow. You can just wait for the 360 version of VF5, it will most likely include online, plus achievements are always fun!

Online Play is the major difference, and whats the difference between VF4 AND VF5, better graphics! This was another of Gameinformer's complaints, its basically the same game, they should have added online for VF5. Hope the 360 version will!

I have them both, and I like them both. I would have to say I like DOA4 better because online play is a blast. But the visuals in VF5 blows DOA4's visuals out of the water.

I have not played Virtua Fighter (yet :)),

Let's put it this way, if you are looking for an arcade fighting game
DOA4 is the best, spectacular, cool interactions with
environement, deep characters (they are not so easy to master as everyone say,
each one has its own moves, and it will take a while for you to find the most suitable), and so on...

If you are looking for a more realistic fighting game,
Virtua Fighter is your game, far more realistic, with great animations and graphics,
maybe less spectacular though.

Both of them are awesome, I prefere DOA, personally (oh, my avatar doesn't suggest so!),
but these are just my opinions!

I wouldn't call tekken an easy to master button masher. I'd say tekken is halfway between Soul Calibur and VF. I think Soul Calibur is one of the best 3d fighters because it is mash-friendly for people that don't know how to play but also pretty compled for those that DO know how to play. Someone mashing has no chance vs someone skillful in parrying and knowing the game.

I haven't played a VF game in a long time but I'm sure it won't have a hard time beating out DOA4. I've played ALOT of DOA4 and it is okay, the series has always been a smudge above mediocre. If you want an arcade fighter, I'd say Soul Calibur is the best choice, not DOA. DOA has a nice reversal system but it is extremely flawed. Someone that plays the game in and out can just play defense all day reversing since the whole system just requires u to know which attacks are high(p/k)/low(p/k).

I always thought Tekken was a little mediocre. I always preferred VF, DOA, and SC over it.

Yeah I've never been a fan of Tekken either. I, too, thought it was always average at best. I would prefer playing DOA to Tekken on most days. I'll only prefer tekken for its single-player and funny story end-sequences.

They have square arenas for a reason, and they said no online for either version, but if online is a big deal for you then yes, DOA4 is the way to go.

Um. Neither have online.

Anybody have a link to this, I don't see why they sega wouldn't put online in the 360 version, after all Microsoft has done all the work of building an online system so it'll be alot easier! Isn't there a rule that games like these have to have online play for 360?

It won't happen. The developement team wants precision, and any lag at all would kill the experience. So they will NOT do it on 360.

Here's what they said in an interview:

"It is because of the delay experienced online, and because the environment and atmosphere of online play makes it impossible to re-create the gameplay as it is in the arcade version, and that's why we're not putting VF5 online"

Like many have been saying DOA4 isnt that much of an improvement over DOA3, the environment graphics are good but the character models arent a huge improvement over 3, cuz 3 had amazing graphics. DOA4 is a great game but I kinda got bored of it. Im not to sure how VF5 will b. It seems technically superior in all ways except no online. Your choice....

Oh yea and I like the huge environments in DOA, always nice to smash ppl, in, through, or off of things. The sqaure limited arenas in VF5 dont appeal to me at all.

People have said that DOA4 is the haven for lag x_x. anyhoo i've never played virtua fighter but i do have DOA4. I'll tell ya right now that i like tekken a way lot more than DOA because tekken doesnt emphasize the counter like DOA4 does. It gets kinda ridiculous when i throw a punch and i get countered for like a 4th of my health. It just isn't that special to me IMO but maybe its cause i've played every tekken since tekken 1

DOA4 is an arcade brawler. VF5 is a hardcore fighting game fan's type of game with an extremely high learning curve, but unmatched depth.

I'm sure i'm minority in this, but I hate games where there are 10+ characters & I have to learn a bazillion different moves to be able to play using all of the characters. The way they are being done any more, you have to pick one character & learn hundreds of button configs. in order to play well with that character. To me the whole combo system has been the downfall of fighting games. I refuse to try & learn all the combo moves & I hate when someone else does them to me & you just have to take it till the combo is done. A good example is Mortal Kombat. You have around 50 characters, all with their own moves fatalities, combos, etc.. I like the games for the fatalities, however, they are so difficult to pull off because you have to be the right distance away depending on your character & then remember the button combo & get it perfect in a limited time. I love MK games, but wish they had 1 button fatalities & the like. I like to play with different characters, not just master 1. Let the disagreements begin.
