Just picked up both of these this morning, will be posting screenshots and a few impessions from both shortly. I know several people have been waiting to see how they turned out, so figured this would be good to give people some answers to questions that may have gone unanswered pre-release!

Need For Speed:

1. Did you also get the console versions? If so how do the graphics compare?

2. Do they require an online pass?

3. Do they use any touch features?

Don't have the console versions, but they aren't on par. I feel that the Vita games look really good, but Need For Speed has a noticably lower resolution and some blurry textures on skyscrapers. Liberation looks beautiful in motion and the freerunning animations are extremely smooth, but can be jaggy at times. Need For Speed has little to no load times at all, Liberations range from really short to a little long.

2. Do they require an online pass?

Nope! Liberation doesn't require any kind of pass or login, Need For Speed only requires you to sign in on Origin or create a nickname and it'll make one for you, which automatically signs you in and gives you access to all online features.

3. Do they use any touch features?

Need For Speed does in the menu as optional navigation or map zooming in/out, and during gameplay the back touch pad is used to control the radio. Liberations SO FAR has very little, but they're implemented niftily. In one mission you'll steal a letter, and to tear the envelope open you have to run your fingers along the front and back screens similar to the motion of opening an actual envelope. Not anything major, but I'm in the very early tutorial stages of the game.

Very well, I'm shocked so far at how fluid movement and freerunning is. Climbing around and hopping from rooftop to rooftop is excellent. The controls themselves feel exactly like console versions of Assassins Creed have, with similar button mapping, etc.

No slowdown at all so far, but I'm early in, I'll edit the post to let you know if it changes!

Are both games running at native res? Those NFS shots look a little blurry. Also, PocketGamer mentioned something significant in their review: "But a few elements got lost in translation. There aren't enough cars on the road to cause gridlock, for example, and the graphics have been scaled down so there are no gates and no dirt." Is that true about the gates and the dirt(I assume he means clouds of dirt)?

I think they're both a little below native, but they look much sharper in motion as compared to the screens.

No gridlock, there are less cars on the road but everything moves smoothly. There are enough cars on the road that you have to pay attention, but not so many that you have to keep slowing down your suped up ferrari to peddle around clunkers :P

Gates are in the game, just in a different way... Instead of having to find the gate and drive up to initiate, it's done through the EasyDrive menu and you select it. Same thing just presented differently for quicker and more convenient use, in line with Criterions whole "pick up and play" idea.

I'm not sure if by dirt he's referring to the clouds of dust that get kicked up or the dirt-shortcuts. There aren't really dirt kick-up effects like in the console versions, but the tires do smoke a bit as you drift and make hard turns. As far as the shortcuts go, they're all there.

There are quite a few pedestrians in Liberations, there's also a lot of opportunities to blend in: benches, groups of people, etc. Feels really natural.

There's a decent amount of traffic in need for speed, not a ton, but with how easy it is to total your car, more cars on the road would be beyond frustrating.

I had problems with that in the *minor spoilers, like, extremely minor*
In the very opening sequence when you play as a little girl, it felt slow and unresponsive.
but after that part the controls have been very slick and responsive.

The population is definitely less than that of the console versions, but there are still quite a few random pedestrians, guards, and groups to blend with. Some of the pedestrian looks are a little overused though, some of the "ladies" look identical, and when three of them are all walking down the street it looks unusual lol.

Easily, I'm six hours in and barely scratched the surface. It's LOADED with stuff to do, the world is giant, seamless, and has no loading times at all barring starting the game up. Criterion meant all they said about wanting it to be a console-like experience, the online multiplayer matches people up really fast, the host-migration works great, and you can drop in and out really easily.Haven't had a single crash, bug, freezup, etc, so it's really polished from what I've played, and the sound effects and feel of the cars is all really good. The open world competitive multiplayer is really fun too, spent about an hour on it, you get a wide variety of things to do, and gives you some time between rounds to explore, pickup new cars, try to wreck other players cars, or get to the next mission first for a point bonus. Haven't tried the coop yet!

Its... hard to explain, its like Risk with slightly more detailed fights. It's a neat distraction, haven't really delved into it much yet, but I like many would rather have a traditional multiplayer experience :P

In your opinion, which is the better game? Both seem like great console-like experiences, but I'm curious as to which you prefer? The most impressive thing I've read about NFS is Eurogamer's review, which says in a small side-box to the review, "For the first time in the handheld's history, we can happily transpose all of our praise and criticism of a home console game to the PlayStation Vita version - which is something of an occasion in itself. Much of the credit must go to Criterion, which handled the Vita version of Most Wanted itself. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the studio's pedigree, it's done an impeccable job. The city of Fairhaven's intact, as are all the cars, billboards, smash gates and speed cameras - and there are even a handful of bespoke events that sit atop those offered in the PS3 and 360 versions. Understandably, it's taken something of a visual hit, but it's never enough to undermine the incredible achievement or the immense novelty of having a faithful handheld port day and date with its bigger cousin." No matter the quality of the game, it's still quite an occasion, since it is the first full console title to release at the same time as the main game.

Hmm.. At this point I'd probably go with Need For Speed. It seems like its more polished and well paced, and the huge world with no loading times is mind boggling on a handheld. Both games have high production values but Liberation has some really slow pacing towards the beginning of the game that seems better left adjusted or left out. My opinion could change the further in I get, but I can tell you that NFS online multiplayer is going to keep me playing that game for a long time after I finish the single player, spent another hour or so on it and it's easily the most well executed/stable/fun online multiplayer I've played on a handheld. Haven't been disconnected ONCE, and it keeps the goals and objectives fresh so the mad dash across the map is fun at all times.

For those who were wondering about how many people there are walking around, took a few pictures to give you an idea:

2012-10-31-001451.jpg2012-10-30-235401.jpg2012-10-31-002540.jpg

Some areas have a little less, like back-alleys, some of the docks, etc, but that's about the typical crowd you can expect.

And that picture just because the swaps are awesome :P

How much longer until the game actually lets you change to a costume that lets you climb? I've done a few missions so far, and I really hate being forced to play in the lady costume that doesn't let you climb. How much longer do I have to endure this? Just climbing around everywhere exploring is the best thing about Assassins Creed. Hate that the game isn't letting me do that yet.

Its only the Dock mission (assuming thats where you are, I agree its bad, the lady is so slow!!!) then it gives you a few missions in the slave outfit, then youre free to pick whatever you want!

Easily Need For Speed, it's worth it for the online multiplayer alone, and the single player game itself is great, the races are very exciting and the sense of speed is great. Haven't run into any bugs and the care and attention to detail is obvious. Resolution could be al ittle better but the total lack of load times in a giant world is more than worth the tradeoff.

I've run into more and more problems with Liberation as I've progressed, nothing gamebreaking, but really annoying bugs like nonresponsive canoes that require you to swim a long, slow, stretch to the mission objective instead of riding in a fast canoe... Or the back camera not registering a bright light source when you have to hold a letter up to the light to find hidden symbols (apparently neither lights, flashlights, or the sun itself count as a bright enough light source and you're forced to exit the game and reload). Liberation is fun, but its got little nagging stuff like that and it pulls it down.

I don't think so, if it does I've seen nothing in game about it, I'm pretty sure given the size of the world its by server connection only.

Hm, that's a shame, but I don't see how the size of its world has anything to do with the lack of Ad-Hoc multiplayer... The city is rendered client-side, not server-side. Midnight Club: LA Remix did 4-player Ad-Hoc in an open world just fine. I doubt it's a technical limitation.

You didn't answer my question but I've found the answer.

I love to follow the story of Assassin's Creed especially the multiplayer mode of AC II brotherhood but now a card game. They didn't show it in E3 but I would like to reveal it so people knew about this. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s0WcaIuciQ]
