I know this was a rumor going into E3, but nothing ever came of it. I was wondering what the latest was on Sony providing PS2 playback for ALL PS3 models via a firmware update?

So then buy a PS2 if you wanna play PS/PS2 games. You can get a used one for $80.
Thanks for that astonishing report...captain obvious.
You think I would have made this thread if I could just go out and buy a ps2? I'd like to have it on my PS3.

no need to be rude. he could have told you to go find one of the 50 other topics on the board that discuss this very issue. Thanks for that astonishing report...captain obvious.

What's more obvious is the lack of BC capable PS3 models that everyone's been complaining about. If you'd done any research at all you'd know the pickings are now slim to none for BC PS3's at retail. It's much easier and cheaper to buy a PS2, like I said before. If you wanted a PS3 with BC you should have picked one up earlier. I purchased a 60GB Day 1 cause I wanted the EE chip. The strategy that Sony seems to be excercising has been publicly known since before PS3 launch.

I know full well that BC PS3s are hard to find at retail...hence, the reason I don't have one. I never said it wasn't easier to pick up a PS2. Why the heck though would I want to pay $130 for a console that is nearly 10 years old? I own a 40GB PS3 and just thought it would be a nice perk if Sony were to eventually enable PS2 playback via some type of firmware update. That was the purpose of this thread...not to tell people to go out and buy a PS2 when it is quite obvious that is the easiest way to play a PS2 game. There would be no need for a thread discussing that...
No, it was not publicly known, and that is the problem. They led us all to believe that BC was a big deal for them, what with the whole "full compatibility with the entire playstation and playstation2 libraries" they hyped up at the E3's leading up to the hardware launch. The softBC 80GB and the newer no-BC models now on the market are false advertising by comparison. What's more obvious is the lack of BC capable PS3 models that everyone's been complaining about. It was public knowledge that future versions of the PS3 would not contain the EE. If you had great concerns for BC then the 60GB should have been your purchase as the future iterations were extrememly unclear.
Just buy a 60GB then. You can still get them off Ebay.metalgear-solidYea, spend $800 and get a box full of cement bricks. :| Right. Or go on uBid and get one for $300 that's basically in pieces and missing half the cables and stuff. No thanks.
No, it wasn't. And they stopped the 60GB manufacturing before anyone sensibly could afford it. The only people who'd want a 40gb unit now as opposed to one of the other consoles only wants it for the fact that the ps3 is still the only BluRay player that will survive Sony's revision fetish for all the BluRay "standard" revisions. There's no point buying a stand-alone player because you'll have to throw it away the second they release a new profile, or every week if you happen to like Fox movies with their relative OCD for DRM. I do have a 60GB model, thankfully. But I paid way too much for it and it was just dumb luck that a Gamestop of all things - and one close by, instead of in another **** state - actually had one. And with my experience with prior PlayStation consoles, I have zero reason to believe this thing's actually going to be reliable in the first place. And then what? I won't be able to play any of my older library because the only models Sony sell now are SOL for BC. Even the 80GB's softBC isn't enough in my case, because I've more than a few titles that according to Sony's own compatibility listing will not work on a softBC PS3, but will work with my hardware BC. All Sony did with these new models and SKU's is bend their fanbase over the table and sodomize us without even so much as spittin' on it. The fact that you are sitting here on this thread trying to defend them speaks of your blind fanboyism, or that you happen to be a glutton for punishment and getting bilked for unnecessary product. I on the other hand like to save money, thank you.It was public knowledge that future versions of the PS3 would not contain the EE. Thank you! You're the only one who seems to get that. Everyone's like, "just go buy a PS2...just buy a 60GB off ebay." I already have a PS3 people!
don't worry they should have one soon if they do. it been rumored that they hired someone just to get this emulation going.
the people who says not possible is on crack because how come i can play snes, turbographics 16 ect. on my pc and there people playing the samething on threre ps 3 using lenix.
all they need to do is figure out how to use the ps 3 hardware(which is way more powerful than the ps 2) to play ps 2 games. all they need to do is use a emulation for the cell to calculate it.

It must be nice to have a bogus blanket fallback explanation that's universally accepted because the word "fanboy" was used.
The goal here is to play PS2 games. You can easily and more affordably play PS2 and PS2 games 100% perfect by purchasing a PS2. Heck, you can purchase a PS3 and PS2 brand new for less than a launch 60GB and have better performing BC as well as more HDD space. There's no reason in complaining. If you're that unsettled find something esle to invest yourself in.
