I read from a number of sources that Sony had confirmed development of a PSP Phone a good long time ago, but haven't heard anything of it since.

Have any of you heard about it? Do you think that Sony's actually going to follow through with production and, if so, do you think they can make it an iPhone competitor?

Personally I would've traded in my pathetic Windows Mobile phone a long time ago, except that I'm waiting for an announcement so I know what kind of time frame I'm looking at.

Remember the N-Gage? Yeah, that didn't work out too well.

There are too many reasons to list why a PSP phone would be COMPLETELY different from the N-Gage, but I do think it needs to be more than a gaming device. With hardware like that, you pretty much NEED to throw some PDA functions onto the phone. At any rate, you can compare to N-Gage, or you can compare to iPhone, considering the latter is far more recent I think it's a better starting point.

There were rumors and that was all there ever was. Never confirmation of any remotely reliable kind.

There was never even any confirmation. The closest we have to confirming it is this picture of a patent filled by Sony Ericsson.

^ That doesn't look too bad. I don't see how a PSP phone would work though. It would still play games, just not on UMD, right?

Isn't the 3000 and GO technically a phone? I mean sure, it only uses Skype for people with an internet connection. But I think that's the closest we're going to get of an actual PSP phone at the moment.

Though, who knows, right? Maybe Sony does have something in store for the future.

We'll have to wait 5 years or so to see a good gaming device with phone built-in.. Sony won't release PSP Phone because it will be reconstruction of iPhone (nobody wants that). Sony created PSP, PSPGo. As for phones - we have SonyEricsson :) For example "Aino" (european name) with MediaGo support.

It's a shame because that's what I'd really want from a new PSP. My iPhone goes with me everywhere because I need to have a phone with me. My PSP doesn't get taken with me because it's just extra weight- it fits in my pocket just fine, but unless I know I'm going to use it, it seems silly to add bulk to my pockets. I have no idea how such a device could designed, but it's something I'd really like to see.
