Although 1080i is techincally better, 720p is much clearer in fast paced games like racers and tekken.

thats because the P in 720p means progressive so it draw both horizontal and vertical lines at the same time, while the I in 1080i means interlaced and only draws the horizontal lines first. so theorteically 1080i is only 540p (not really though because its not progressive) thats why 720p looks better and I always reccomend progressive over interlaced unless your playing a slow game like oblivion or other rpgs.

1080i is higher resolution, but it is not technically better. 720p is "technically" better. But I digress.

Each television model looks different at different resolutions. My TV looks better at 720p than 1080i in my opinion, so I stick with that.

so in a slow paced game like oblivion would the difference in 1080i and 1080p be small but fighting games and car racing games you start to notice the difference??

So wait, I have a 1080i Tv. Are you telling me that I've been looking at games in 1080i and not 720p? How do I set games to run in 720p only? I got Tekken and felt the same as this guy.

just set your PS3 to output to 720p hopefully your tv is not one of the ancient ones that couldnt do 720p.

Yes, you are incorrect. It is not about drawing horizonal and vertical lines at the same time. It means that instead of drawing alternate horizontal rows of pixels every other frame refresh, it draws EVERY horizontal row EVERY refresh.

Well the whether 720p or 1080i looks better depends on a lot of things. First off the size of your tv, second your viwing angle, third your relative distance. If you sit right up close then you are pretty much wasting 1080i. At a good distance from my 60" (roughly 8-10 feet) 1080i conquers 720p. If you have a smaller TV the viewing range is closer. Also make sure you sit perpendicular to the middle of the screen (or no more than 15 degrees less or more). Its not all cut and dry -- check around online for your size, model, and viewing ranges. Better yet check your TV's manual. Mine was like a novel.

If he has a 1080i tv he is getting 1080i on the screen no matter what.............the tv receives 720p and upscales it

Hmm, I've been playing some racing games on my PS3 at 1080i and never noticed anything wrong. But then again, aren't a lot of the PS3 games set at 720p so they play at that resolution even you have the PS3 set for 1080i. The PS3 doesn't have an upscaler (yet) so it cannot make the games that resolution if they are not set at it.

IMHO:

1080p >>>>>>>>> 720p >> 1080i.

Interlaced presentation is crap for gaming, I'm really surprised that we all put up with it for so long.

1080i is fine for documentaries on the discovery channel, but try watching a basketball game in it...

Most video game visuals are much more akin to basketball than documentaries.

Correct... Almost all modern HDTV (except the few CRT displays out there) are "fixed-pixel" displays. They have an internal scaler and everything that they display is scaled to their native resolution.

1080i is not so good for fast moving games, but I don't have any problems playing Tekken5 DR in 1080i. Loks great imo. You get less jaggies. So its realy a choices between Jaggies and graphicaly tearing. and as long as the game doesn't move at faster then 30fps 1080i should be better then 720p.

It has an upscaler chip inside of it but it's just not activated yet,but that should change with a firmware update

If your TV only support 720P and 1080i, the TV will probably have a resulotion near or exact at 720P (1366x768 is the most common) and then 720P will look better because 720P are showed natively but 1080i will only be upscaled. A 1080P TV send 1920x1080 natively which make the 1080 resolutions look better because 720P need to be downscaled.

The Progressive resolution looks better because all horizontal lines updates at the same time and interlanced only updates half of the picture (1 3 5 7 and so on then 2 4 6 8 and so on) both in 60hz (60 times per second). This makes Progressive more stable and better looking!

If you play a 'fast game' like racers and fighters 1080i sucks. With some 'slower games' its much better but i always use 720p

I prefer 1080i/p. Sure games still look stunning in 720 but the advantages of 1080 are clear, literally.
