they took away the chip to force people to buy more Ps3 software...that was the one and only reason buddy.yeah i can understand cheaping out on the hardware
but an emulation PROGRAM costs nothing?

I can see them releasing a software emulation through a firmware update. But I can also see them release the software emulation on a disk that people would need to purchase and install ($0-$40).

Yea and windows costs nothing too. /sarcasm.
They have to pay people to program new code because even the full software bc ps3s still had ps2 components in them. They did a thing where they showed the motherboard of both the new and part software bc ps3s at some conference.
the ps3 is just so much more powerful though im surprised they can't just do a straight up port translation or something
why do they even need the exact ps2 hardware? these games should run better on a ps3

I'm not sure about that. I think they would have to reprogram it to work without the components. And I think spending their assets on coding it all again wouldn't be efficent seeing as times are tough all around. The singstar games have been given an update to be able to play the ps2 versions on all ps3s. But i'm guessing that is cause the singstar people actually made the code.
Heck, I'm not even sure the 360's backwards compatibility is being supported anymore. They had a pure software emulator and it was only guaranteed to work with specific games. MS kept releasing patches that would expand the list of compatible games, but I haven't heard anything for a while.
Nothing beats having the acutal silicon. The only reason the PS3 could do 99% emulation was because it basically had most of a PS2's chips in it. I'm guessing that you will never see emulation come back on the PS3. The only way to play old games will be if Sony recodes and releases them on the Playstation Store. That's what Nintendo and Microsoft are doing.
