I haven't gotten too far into it, but so far I get the impression that MGS4 has great graphics and great story but very bad gameplay. There seem to be sizable sections where stealth is thrown out the window in favor of action that doesn't work at all. The sneaking seems somewhat OK but the AI is absolutely horrible. Anyone else find this game rather dissapointing?trakemHave you played any of the other Metal Gear's?

I loved Metal Gear (NES), MGS (PS1) and MGS2 (PS2) but I think the action sceens fail completely since the game isn't really built to be a shooter.
Look at where the game is set. You can't be stealthy in a war-torn city. :([QUOTE="trakem"]I haven't gotten too far into it, but so far I get the impression that MGS4 has great graphics and great story but very bad gameplay. Yea. I played Metal Gear (NES), MGS (PS1), MGS2 (PS2) and a little bit of MGS3 (PS2). I loved most of the Metal Gear series though I didn't even try the PSP card battle stuff. The previous games have really focused on stealth. MGS4 has stealth, but it also has those action portions that just don't seem to work at all.

Seriously, the game wants to be a stealth game most of the time (and does so well when it's trying to be that) but then you have those action sequences. If they wanted it to be an action game, they should have made the gameplay more akin to a FPS or something.

Yeahhh, like the whole thing with the 1st person perspective. I think Kojima was just trying to appeal to the other gamers. And that's what was said at one of the conferences...They stated that you could basically choose which way you wanted to play the game and experience everything in your own way. You could go in Guns blazing. Or Be traditional :)[QUOTE="pokerchamp1"][QUOTE="trakem"][QUOTE="Symphonycometh"]On your own. A fan of the series will know the game upgraded.trakem

Because something different is too hard for you? I handled the stealth aspect just fine....Really. I felt too guilty to kill too many people since the opening was so depressing to watch. Even so, the stealth aspect is perfectly there. The only thing i dont like about mgs is the non-colourful book included in it so that prevents me from giving mgs anything higher than a 9.999999999999999999999999999999999.haseeb_1989But I thought you rarely get a instruction booklet with color now-a-days?

Ditto. Are you sure you were playing it right TC? I cannot see how anyone could ever be disappointed in MGS4, the current GOTY.

Yah but its been an mgs tradition.
No the gameplay is amazing, brilliant action sets too.
I thought the story was overdone, it was technically amazing enough to make one feel imersed. Snakes story was cool, especially with the being old and dying part. Vamp and Raidens rivalry was cool, but there were all these really bloated cheesy scenes, especially the love story. But I guess there were so many amazing parts you let it slide.
The motorcycle scene was phenomenal.

You can be stealthy, you can shoot everything, or you can just ignore it all and run past everything half the time.
The real problem though lies in the action only sections. Like, if you're fighting tons of Ocelots guards that come in by the truck load. You can't really sneak your way through that section and the game doesn't work well enough as a shooter.
When I first started playing it I was really disappointed by the AI. The more I got into it. The more I realized that they did a very good job with the AI. It is some of the best out there. As far as sneaking in a war torn city. First of all you need to look around more. You don't have to go through battles guns blazing. Right now I am doing my no kill no alert play through, and I am having a blast. Check for things that are hidden. Like in the rebel bunker you can find a rebel uniform. Using that allows you to run alongside the rebels without an alert. It is a different style of MGS sneaking, but it is very good. There are multiple paths to get almost anywhere. Just open your eyes, and make use of the MK II, but be sure to turn on it's stealth.FrankenLife
The stealth parts of the game work OK. When you're running around in the war torn city there are many things you can do to keep yourself hidden and that's cool. However, if you're in one of the parts where MGS4 completely forgets that it was supposed to be a stealth game you're screwed.
uh, you can sneak from the beginning till the end of the game...doesnt matter where it's at. And how is the ai horrible? On the boss extreme they see you from far away and once you get caught you die if you get shot 4-5 times and it's really hard to hide from them unlike the other mgs games where you can go to the next room, hide and the enemies wont find you.GSWarriors-
Do you remember the section of the game with Ocelot's personal guards that come by the truck load and attack you and the people you're with? You can sneak through that?
Yeh i was, i also thought the a.i was poor on normal and the enviroments wernt great for stealth. fhoeiuwhdousah
the environment isnt supposed to be easy for stealth.. it is a warzone.. you are the one that is supposed to be good at it.. AI poor and weak gameplay? what the hell? lol :|

you mean at the place where you first meet meryl? what the hell you expect them to do in that situation? meryl and her team were found by them and it's part of the game, just accept it. There are a couple more situations like that so you might as well get used to it. i dont see whats the big deal

@trakem you know that that is the "Boss fight" of that level right? boss fights arent for skeaking.. and the game wasnt supposed to be 100% stealth.. but 90%.. which it is.. so stop complaining about such irrelevant things -.-
would it be a good idea to get mgs4 because i like a game with good graphicssprymantis
lol, cant you tell by the game's rating? a 10? lol. well, yes, of course, it's a good idea. (-.-)
The gameplay in MGS4 is very detailed. Make use of everything and use stealth and don't just run and gun. It has ALOT of features that your mind won't recognize from the very first 2 playthroughs. In other words, playing MGS4 twice in a row is still not enough to fully explore the gameplay. The more you play the more you find out things you didn't know. Don't just go throwing random words when you still haven't fully explored the game. AgentH
Yeah I have to agree. I've beaten this game 12 times now (Just recently got all emblems too :)) and I must say I still discovered a lot of gameplay mechanics even around my 6th playthrough.
