I haven't gotten too far into it, but so far I get the impression that MGS4 has great graphics and great story but very bad gameplay. There seem to be sizable sections where stealth is thrown out the window in favor of action that doesn't work at all. The sneaking seems somewhat OK but the AI is absolutely horrible. Anyone else find this game rather dissapointing?

Not really. The story was a little bloated in places (especially the ending) and Kojima probably could have done with a better editor, but the game itself matched my expectations and then some.

I loved Metal Gear (NES), MGS (PS1) and MGS2 (PS2) but I think the action sceens fail completely since the game isn't really built to be a shooter.

I also didnt like any of the charactors, story to me was garbage i didnt like it. Gameplay was meh standard stealth (octacamo was dumb) and spawning enemies. Some good bits and worth playing but 100% overated!

Look at where the game is set. You can't be stealthy in a war-torn city. :(

Yea. I played Metal Gear (NES), MGS (PS1), MGS2 (PS2) and a little bit of MGS3 (PS2). I loved most of the Metal Gear series though I didn't even try the PSP card battle stuff. The previous games have really focused on stealth. MGS4 has stealth, but it also has those action portions that just don't seem to work at all.

Then you shouldn't stage a stealth game in a war torn city! Seriously, the game wants to be a stealth game most of the time (and does so well when it's trying to be that) but then you have those action sequences. If they wanted it to be an action game, they should have made the gameplay more akin to a FPS or something.

Yeahhh, like the whole thing with the 1st person perspective. I think Kojima was just trying to appeal to the other gamers. And that's what was said at one of the conferences...They stated that you could basically choose which way you wanted to play the game and experience everything in your own way. You could go in Guns blazing. Or Be traditional :)

Because something different is too hard for you? I handled the stealth aspect just fine....Really. I felt too guilty to kill too many people since the opening was so depressing to watch. Even so, the stealth aspect is perfectly there.

The only thing i dont like about mgs is the non-colourful book included in it so that prevents me from giving mgs anything higher than a 9.999999999999999999999999999999999.

I've played 3 and the gameplay in it was basically awful. Controls were wonky and the stealth just didn't work. MGS4 fixes a lot of that, but some of the controls are still iffy and the action really is below-average. Stealth is pretty good though.

No the gameplay is amazing, brilliant action sets too.

I thought the story was overdone, it was technically amazing enough to make one feel imersed. Snakes story was cool, especially with the being old and dying part. Vamp and Raidens rivalry was cool, but there were all these really bloated cheesy scenes, especially the love story. But I guess there were so many amazing parts you let it slide.

The motorcycle scene was phenomenal.

Here's the thing though, you really can't. With the stealth section you do have a choice. You can be stealthy, you can shoot everything, or you can just ignore it all and run past everything half the time.

The real problem though lies in the action only sections. Like, if you're fighting tons of Ocelots guards that come in by the truck load. You can't really sneak your way through that section and the game doesn't work well enough as a shooter.

When I first started playing it I was really disappointed by the AI. The more I got into it. The more I realized that they did a very good job with the AI. It is some of the best out there. As far as sneaking in a war torn city. First of all you need to look around more. You don't have to go through battles guns blazing. Right now I am doing my no kill no alert play through, and I am having a blast. Check for things that are hidden. Like in the rebel bunker you can find a rebel uniform. Using that allows you to run alongside the rebels without an alert. It is a different style of MGS sneaking, but it is very good. There are multiple paths to get almost anywhere. Just open your eyes, and make use of the MK II, but be sure to turn on it's stealth.

The stealth parts of the game work OK. When you're running around in the war torn city there are many things you can do to keep yourself hidden and that's cool. However, if you're in one of the parts where MGS4 completely forgets that it was supposed to be a stealth game you're screwed.

uh, you can sneak from the beginning till the end of the game...doesnt matter where it's at. And how is the ai horrible? On the boss extreme they see you from far away and once you get caught you die if you get shot 4-5 times and it's really hard to hide from them unlike the other mgs games where you can go to the next room, hide and the enemies wont find you.

No really you can sneak at any point. Obviously you have fight at the boss battles. But even then you don't have to kill them to get a victory. Just change your perspective the situation.

Well Snake is a proffesional, he can use stealth in pretty much ANY location. Besides, that's why you have Octo Camo.

@trakem you know that that is the "Boss fight" of that level right? boss fights arent for skeaking.. and the game wasnt supposed to be 100% stealth.. but 90%.. which it is.. so stop complaining about such irrelevant things -.-

agreed. MGS4 i think it GOTY also. By the way it preforms and all. Even when you upper the difficult you see how hard it becomes. You shouldn't complain about you can't run all the way through the mission. It would be boring. If you really want to be sealthy then play Splinter Cell. Your the only person that thinks the game is a dispointment.

The gameplay in MGS4 is very detailed. Make use of everything and use stealth and don't just run and gun. It has ALOT of features that your mind won't recognize from the very first 2 playthroughs. In other words, playing MGS4 twice in a row is still not enough to fully explore the gameplay. The more you play the more you find out things you didn't know. Don't just go throwing random words when you still haven't fully explored the game.

Nope just you. I love the game, the graphics, story and gameplay are great. Whoever said that the Octocamo sucked, you must be blind and insane to think that. The game's great overall but I respect your opinion, everyone's got their own. I haven't played the other MGS games really, although I own Snake Eater, but I've got to say, this game is amazing in every way. No doubt about it, if there's another MGS game I'ma get it.

im still in the "omgawd epic" phase after having just finished the game yesterday so i'l only comment on the combat

i have played MGS1 for the PS1, thought it was decent
i have played MGS2 for the PS2, completed the game all the while loathing the horrible combat system and repetetive scenery. its been a while but from what i remember the only way to look more than 2 feet infront of you was to enter FP mode wich in turn rendered you immobile, combined with patrolling enemys this meant you would continuously switch back and forth to avoid running straight into the enemys face, likely this was the only reason that solid used a radar in these games -.-

MGS4 for me was the first game in the series i thoroughly enjoyed since for the first time picking up a gun did not feel like having a handicap. I am no fan of endless enemy spawns but this time atleast you are properly equiped to counter them.

i did wish the whole "assist the rebels" section of the game felt more fleshed out in the story rather than ending up feeling like a insignificant minigame.

Yeah I have to agree. I've beaten this game 12 times now (Just recently got all emblems too :)) and I must say I still discovered a lot of gameplay mechanics even around my 6th playthrough.

hmmm... i seen a topic like this a many times but the answer is still NO... and we all know that we have our own taste on gaming... like before, i thought gears of war was great. but then, when i played the pc version... hmmm.. i dont know, i still don't have plan to finish it because its kinda repeated, the story s***, the people are steroid freaks and still, i am NOT dissapointed that it gots 9.6...

I thought the graphics were great, story sucked beyond belief and the game play was tight but clustered online. First MGS game I played and wasn't too dissapointed. People need to lower expectations for games. I have to lower story possibilities to almost nothing because every developer seems to make retarded twists or just plain boring stories.

No. Everyone likes different things and something is always overrated to someone. I loved MGS4 and thought it was one of the best games to come along in a while. Then I played GTA4 and got bored of that in like 10 minutes. We don't care if you liked a game or not.

Not at all. This game was amazing in every way, shape, and form. And how was the A.I. poor? Maybe get off the easiest level and you will find there is quite a difference....

Yup, but I expected to be somewhat disappointed. I have never been a big MGS fan.

i played most metal gear games and i actually liked this one better, doesnt deserve a 10 though more like a 9.5, the story was great and i like how it has more action now instead of using stealth all the time. mixing it up is great so u wont get bored. use stealth one stage than action the next. i think Grand Theft Auto 4 is over rated.
