I want to buy a PS3 but I don't have an HDTV. Do the games on a PS3 scale properly on a standard TV? For example, I've heard that the text in some games is optimized for HD and becomes unreadable on a standard def TV. Is this an issue with the PS3? I'm primarily interested in RPGS so I'm concerned about the readability of text and menus. I'm also intersted MGS4, BioShock, Killzone 2 and Fallout 3 so I'd appreciate any feedback from people who are playing those games minus HD. Thanks!

i play it on standard, cuz i dont have hmdi (or whatever it was called) but my tv says it's HDTV. but i havent seen that thing being HD (i think my friend's 360 ran HD... but it was so long ago, i dont remember). so i think im safe to say it's not lethal for ps3 to run in SDTV. but it looks really bad

for the texts, only rpg i played on ps3 was valkyria, and it certainly helps if u have hdtv, but u can read it nonetheless. at least the important parts.

I play on an SDTV and games still look gorgeous. I've never ran into problems with reading text, that really depends on the size of your TV. For example I can't play Fallout 3 in my bedroom because I have a smaller TV in there and the text in the FO3 menus are kind of small. But if you have a good sized SDTV you should be fine.

Heck yes brother! I have my PS3 connected to my Samsung SDTV, bought in 1993, in my bedroom. :P

Downstairs in the "play room" is a large (very large) rear-projector SDTV, bought in 2006, which I use to watch TV and DVD's on.

Upstaris in the lounge room is a medium LCD HDTV mounted to the wall. My family uses that for playing music throughout the day and ocassionally watch movies together.

I take my PS3 to those tv's sometimes when there are people over and we're having a tournament, etc.

But 90% of my gaming is on a 1993 model SDTV in my room haha. :D

I played with a SDTV for awhile but finally upgraded. You'll be just find playing in SD but when you upgrade to HD you'll never wanna go back.

Do yourselves a favour and buy a HDTV + HDMI cable ASAP! You will definitely not regret it.

I'm begging you, it's a crime to be playing a PS3 without HD. I played without HD for a couple weeks, and I've been kicking myself over it.

To really get the benefits from your PS3, yes, you will need to purchase an HDTV, preferably one that can do 1080p resolutions.

I would definitely get an hdtv, but just make sure it supports 720p because for some reason almost all the games the ps3 has supports 720p and very few support 1080i. Games that support 1080p like mgs4 look amazing so I would definitely wait it out and get a 1080p tv because it will support any resolution the ps3 throws at you. thats what i did and I love it :D

You can do HD with component cables (red, green, blue, white, red cords) or DVI. It just depends on what inputs your TV has. What is the make and model of your TV?

I have my ps3 hooked up to the old Commodore 64 monitor... yeah it still works XD. Looks pretty good, everything is readable that I've run into, hardest stuff I've seen for reading is the type in the playstation store, everything else I've encountered surfing the web, or in games/menus was fine.

It's not hard to tell yourself you don't need a large HDTV. But it's impossible to go back to SDTV after you take the plunge.

I used to have a SDTV and it was big, it still looked awsome, I think you will only have troubles reading the text if your TV is really small. But if it's an honest size you shouldn't have no problems.

I have a 19" HD tv and a 32" SD tv. There is a huge difference between HD and SD, but it's certainly not PS2 style graphics as mentioned earlier. If you have no other choice, don't let it put you off but if you have the money get the HD TV. Unfortunately my wife seems to think that fixing the bathroom and getting carpets is more important than replacing a perfectly fine TV for a new HD one.

Oh - I tend to use the SD TV. So it's certainly not unusable, IMHO.

b4 i use to play on sony trinitron sdtv 25inch for 3 months.. it was just 'okay' to play on it, but i still notice big graphical diff., till i snagged a hdtv and my jaw dropped. actually its ok to use sdtv, it just has to be big enough to see more, i think around 30inches up. save for hdtv or something, IT'S WORTH IT.

SD Is pretty bad, but a cheap 720p tv for under a 1000 can run it great.

That's how I started with my PS3. It doesn't look bad but as for the text part, it's (barely) readable in games like GTA 4. If you can afford to get an HDTV, do so. If not, it's no big deal. The games still look good.
