Just wondering. I'm getting the PS3/Killzone 2/MGS4 bundle soon, and I'm wondering if I can still enjoy MGS4 without having played the other ones.

No I didn't enjoy it at all. Although I still gave it a good rating because I realise it's a good game in it's own right.
Not played previous MGS games!? do such people exist? lol
Anyway you will still find MGS4 an enjoyable experience regardless if you haven't played the previous titles in the genre. You just wouldn't understand the story and know about some characters but otherwise the gameplay is really top notch and awesome. I do suggest you picking up previous MGS titles at some point as it will enhance the experience of MGS4. BTW you may find the cutscenes unnecessarily long but that's how MGS has always been and I wouldnt have it any other way, after-all its part movie and part videogame combined to make the best videogame experience.
Yes get it, the first time I played through MGS4 I didn't play through the other ones and still loved it. Your going to get a confused with the story but it's still very enjoyable.
A lot of the comedy and story will go right over your head, but the gameplay will still be terrific.
Yes, you will enjoy it !
There are people thatwere moved by the story even without playing the previous games, it's that good. The gameplay isvery very good as well, and it's somethingyou will never experience in any other game, so go for it bud, the game is a work of art.
I bought the Essentials Collection before MGS4 came out and I thought the games were pure garbage
They fixed the gameplay in MGS4 and I enjoyed the game
I played through half of MGS 4 and really felt like I was the guy walking in on the punchline without hearing the joke. I guess its a good story on its own, but there are a ton of references to things outside that game. You can download (for free) the MGS database from the PSN, and it has all the info on everything MGS oriented. It even denies you access to spoiler content from MGS 4 until you play it, which is great.
For me, though, I really wanted to know the backstory as it seemed really important, especially when 4 has like 10 hours of movie to watch and it ties in closely with the last 3 games....now Im going back to play all the originals (well, except MG1 and 2). I made it through the first two in a couple of days, and they hold up well. Playing through them definitely means more than reading the database....The story is awesome, and I feel like 4 is going to be way better when I get back to it now that I know the characters and the story from the inside....
Id recommend dropping the 10 bucks on a MGS1 download and see if you can enjoy the older graphics and gameplay; if you can, its totally worth it imo
I enjoyed MGS4 and never played any other MGS games....You don't miss much backstory if you pay close attention to the cutscenes

No...If you pay attention to what's going on you can pretty much figure everything out...Everything is explained
I think the only things that are overrated about it are the story (massively) and the graphics (only a tiny bit). I felt the gameplay was among the best this gen.I enjoyed it without playing previous games of the series, but honestly think it is way overrated.

I played Metal Gear Solid 2 on PS1 via Japanese import and I didn't have a scart so it was foreign and in black and white LOL so yeah didn't enjoy that much...
But I played Metal Gear Solid 4 because my mate is a fanatic and pretty much forced me to buy it and although I didn't get much of the story, I still really enjoyed the game - and would recommend it.
