So I purchased a sony refurb 40 gig PS3 yesterday at gamespot. 229 so not a bad price. However I'm gonna have to swap it in soon because it freezes on games like Uncharted 2 and the God of War 3 demo. So did I just get a bad one or is most 40 gig's reliable? I've also noticed that it gets extremly hot!

I started to do that but I don't like the dull color on the slim. I like the shiny black :)

It has a 1 year warranty on it that i got. Of course I''ll never let it run out as you can add to the warranty as long as you don't let it expire. That does worry me though as I don't wanna send it off like I did the Xbox.

Why wouldn't you dish out a few more dollars and get a new PS3 with 3X the storage capacity?

I'm very happy with my 40gig that I've had for about one and a half years now. Some games freeze up from their own faults. My Fallout 3 has frozen on me roughly 20+ times. (that game is buggy as hell) Uncharted 2 has froze on me once. I'm not sure if that's normal for the GoW3 demo though...

You make a good point. However I don't like the dull black look to the Slim. I like the shiny black better :) I have a 80 gig drive I can put in the 40 but I'm not gonna unless I switch it for another first.

I have a 40g with a 500g hdd in it. Never froze on me except with fallout 3 when most of the main story missions are completed. Aside from that, not a single issue.

If the warranty is still there return it. I don't know why you wouldn't. Unless you like paying $150 to Sony to get it fixed later on.

My 40 GB was a p.o.s. It got YLoD first then it came up with Disc read errors about two and a half months later. Both times Sony fixed them under warranty. The last and final nail was the Blu-ray stopped working after the 3.0 firmware update. Sony won't fix this for free, and I'm not paying them $150 to fix something their firmware messed up.

So my 40Gb sits in a box waiting for me to decide what to do with it. It's been replaced by a Slim 120 GB, and if it starts acting up I won't buy another PS3.

It seems like more and more phats are having Blu-ray laser failures. I'd recommend taking the 40Gb back and getting your money back or applying it towards the purchase of a Slim. Especially if you already are having freeze up issues. So far the slims seem to be holding up pretty well, of course they've only been out for 4 months so I guess time will tell.

First, I'll also echo others that I've had no issues with my 40 GB PS3 (now 300 GB upgraded HDD).

My opinion is you really take a risk with getting certain refurbished equipment.

Some of them can be OK, such as Dell computers (example only....dont bash, my own computer is built by my own hands) for example because they are considered Refurbished but all that really happened (usually) is they were returned because someone couldnt make the payments.

Things like the PS3 and other electronic items, i GURANTEE you it was returned because it was faulty and someone claimed to have fixed it. So, you are buying something that has already failed once (assuming it was even fixed properly).

I usually don't recommend refurb items and $229 seems a little high when you can get a slim for $299. I think your okay as long as it comes with at least a 1 year warranty. If it is only a 90 day I'd take it back. I have the 60gb and a slim and the slim seems better built. It is much quieter and puts out only a fraction of the heat.

I bought a used 40GB Ps3 a few months ago and everything has been ok. I remember back when a firmware update caused some freezes on Uncharted 1, mine didn't suffer from those freezes. The only problem I've had is with the GoW3 demo, it freezes sometimes but I haven't had this problem with any retail game.

Hey, just a couple other things. I wouldnt freak out about Uncharted 2. I remember running into a couple lock ups during my single player experience. It is a near flawless game, but I did run into a couple technical issues like that. Luckily it autosaves all the time, so you cant lose much progress. Also, my PS3 gets very hot too, so I wouldnt worry too much unless you are getting some various obvious problems. Also, you want to be sure it has at least a few inches of room on the sides and back of it so it can ventilate properly. My guess is thats the only thing that could go wrong with heat....unless the fan dies.
