Hi, I'm thinking about getting a PS4, but a lot of forums say that 500gb are not enough. I'm planning on buying major part of games in physical form, but I'm still gonna buy games on the PS Store occasionally. Right now I have a PS3 and around 12 physical games and around 5 digital ones. So, should I get a PS4 with 500gb or 1tb?

I would get a 1 TB PS4. I will give you more space. Regardless if you're buying the psychical or digital PS4 game, both version will install their full size onto your Hard-Drive. Anywhere between 20GB-60GB+ for larger games.

If 1 TB isn't enough for you then pick up the 500GB (since it's cheaper) and buy a 2 TB HDD and install it yourself. (Very easy and it doesn't effect the warranty).

Here is the video if you decide to upgrade to 2TB HDD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8K_SpOZuIw

If you got the money, upgrade to an SSD: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1466608388&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+ssd

SSD's help with loading times immensely (if you go digital), especially with games like Dark Souls 3 and others.

Terrible idea, to be honest. Unless money is absolutely not an issue because SSD's are still way expensive compared to normal HDD's. And the benefits of using one with a console just isn't worth it.

Anyway, this storage space questions gets asked a lot. Yes, you will fill up a 500GB HDD pretty fast. Fortunately, game installs are very fast with physical games, meaning you can delete a game install and then quickly re-install it should you want to play it again. Unfortunately, there's still potentially large patches to deal with, which could make that previous point moot if you don't have a fast internet connection. I would say to get the 1TB PS4 and work with that. I don't know what the price differences are, but just consider that a 2TB HDD will cost you around $80-100. So if the 1TB console is $50 more than the 500GB, then it could be worth getting the 500GB model and replacing the HDD with a 2TB.

Like I said, IF you got the money, it's a great idea. Loading times add up, you can be saving anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour during the course of a game with an SSD. Add up the loading times of every other game you play and yeah, its worth it.

No, specially if you are going to purchase digital games ( sometimes there are very good sales in the PS Store ), the deletion shuffle only works when you purchase a game, play it and forget about it for months ( the deletion also erases updates so you´ll have to download them again ). A 2 TB is a nice upgrade and you´ll have plenty of room for several games ( and their updates ). BTW, you´ll end up with a spare 500 GB for your PS3.

I think 2TB is too much, I have friends with the 1TB version and they don't have problems with it, also loading screens are not an issue at all for me. Right now I found a 500GB PS4 at 294,00 euros and a 1TB PS4 at 329,00 so I'm thinking about getting the 1TB one.

2TB is not too much unless you plan to only have a handful of games. That's what I have and I'm down to 300gb.

Remember the system needs at least 100gb free for you to be able install things. Friend had less than that, and he could not install a game even though the game only took up 30gb.

At the beginning of the console and until something like 1 year old 500GB were fine because of the average size of 20...30 GB and the small amount of games it has to offer relatively for today...but if you planning on buying it now i'd recommend you about the 1TB version as every game is about 50GB+ today, but if you don't have consistently more than 6..7 games in your console at the same time or you finish your games quickly and you can clear up space rapidly you should think about the 500GB version nevertheless and save some money. (related to digital copies only!)

Thanks to everyone for the answers, now I have another question. I heard of this new Playstation 4 Neo that is coming out in september (?) and I also heard that the price of regular 500GB & 1TB PS4s will drop after its release. Since I'm not an expert in economy & stuff, how much will a 1TB PS4 cost less after the release?

@foxterpop: To be honest we don't have any information about Neo as of yet. Not the price of it or the features included, or the official release date.

As of right now, rumors are saying it might be coming this year. That's all I'm aware of. It could be worth waiting until the end of the year and by then we might have Neo out and the pricing will be clear.

Only shuhei yoshida can answer this at the moment, it's all speculations for now about the PS4K\PS-NEO.

I buy everything digital and so I'm at the point where every time I buy a game now I have to delete one or two others for space. It's not THAT big of an issue because you're never really playing 10 games at a time. It's just more of an annoyance.

@foxterpop: yes 500gb. Amount of games I can keep depends. I have a lot of major AAA releases around 40-50gb each and then some indies too so it varies depending on what you play. I'm not sure how many off the top of my head, but you can do the math you know, 500 gb is going to be around 8-10 big games give or take.

Its not enough and I dont get why SONY hasnt made a 1TB standard yet.

500gb isnt as bad as like the days of the 40gb 60gb 80gb on the PS3.

500gb isnt gonna run out that quick like those PS3 models did on the PS3, but no... 500gb is barely manageable. But then again... Im barely playing/buying games these days anyways. I only have 5 disck games of which 4 I havent touched and deleted after I finished them, some PSN+ Freebies, but none of those have been big AAA type games like they used to give out on the PS3.

But you can get a 2TB and upgrade your PS4 for like $100 or less.

@foxterpop: I upgraded my PS4 to 2TB.

I upgraded my PS3 last gen to 1TB many years ago.

HDDs are always too small, as I noticed with my Wii, 360, and PS3 last gen.

for me i rarely buy stuff from the PSN store because i prefer physical games but i've never filled up any of my systems at all. but i'm the only one who plays it though. a friend at work was saying his ps4 is pretty filled up. i'm not sure which one he has but he has also added that it's a family console and that's why it's so full. he deletes the games he rarely plays and i think he uses the PSN store a lot. 500 for me is a lot more than my 180 i think? PS3 2nd Version or whatever you want to call it ? and it's still not fulll and i've had mine for 6 years. but again like i said i rarely if ever buy stuff from the PSN store. i also have a vita so i did buy a couple digital games for that the other nite though.

If you buy the games mostly on disc? Yes, 500GBs is fine.

Have well over 40 big games plus a ton of little downloads on the launch model PS4.

Trick is with the 'big games', you'll need to uninstall some from your hard drive when storage is getting low. Pick the games you're either bored playing, and/or taking a break from. Install data has no effect on your save-data, so it's not really an issue.

500gb is enough for me because after I have finished with a certain game I just delete it off my hardrive so i haven't got a problem with space on my my hardrive

The 500GB HDD in PS4 console is not enough. So I would go for the 1TB HDD model. Or you could install your own HDD. a 3TB, 4TB ,5TB or even a 6TB HDD. These might be a bit expensive, but worth it if you gonna have a lot of PS4 games. I have only 37 retail PS4 games, my 500GB HDD was filled up long ago. I could only fit 20 games on PS4 500GB HDD.

So go for the 1TB HDD or install the largest HDD that you can in your PS4 console.

@foxterpop:

Just as the majority has said, 500gb isn't enough because both digital and disc versions of games take up about the same amount of space.

And the fact that you might want to download movies is another reason to get a bigger HDD.

Maybe if you're a casual gamer but the first model should have came with a 1 TB hard drive. I'm constantly having to delete games to install new ones. Four games shouldn't be taking up half of your hard drive. It's ridiculous.

buy a 2tb hard drive if you got the cash. even if you think you won't need that much memory its better to have all that extra memory and not need it, than to need it and not have it. regardless if the majority of your games are download or physical disc they eat up space on a 500gb and even a 1tb real quick.

@Sokol4ever: That's what I hate about this new gaming era. The games have to install into your console. Are the discs even worth buying now if everything has to be installed? Does the game even run from the disc anymore?
