Are all Final Fantasy games about defeating the evil empire and saving the world? Are there any with a story like Xenogears (uncovering your past or some dark truth) with plot twists and non cliche stories?

If you want to throw in that stint of emo characters with convenient amnesia along with it, then yes. That would sum up every Final Fantasy game I've played.
Well, Final Fantasy 8 was about stopping a witch who controlled time and had a bit of "facing your past" written in to the story.
lol, Who made Sephiroth? Who pissed him off?
They might have been a small part of the actual story, but they were the whole reason for AVALANCHE and Sephiroth's crazy rampage all over the planet. They're pretty much the catalyst behind everything.
FFX is all i can think of. but ur still sorta saving the world... XII?? and X-2 had different stories also. i thought they all had plot twists... i mean cmon, ur first time playing ff7 u really thought aeris would get killed? i sure as hell know i didnt think that.Bangerman15
A "god book" in the JP version brought her back to life (apparently):P
But yeah, I remember how pissed people got when she was killed off. Some even talked about crying:lol:
lol, Bunch of cheaters... that's not even canon. I wouldn't want to do that because it's like carrying a zombie with you everywhere you go.

Come on, you're telling me you've never tried a Final Fantasy "boss in your party" type of code? lol She could qualify under that class...
Crisis Core explains it better than FFVII ever did. Imo.lol, Who made Sephiroth? Who pissed him off?

Not all. Vii was about defeating a big corporation and X was about defeating your family and xii ... well does anyone know what XII was about ??

Trust me. You make yourself look nerdy enough already. :P Anyway, sure, Shinra was the catalyst that set the story on its tracks, but they fell to the wayside in no time. What really formed AVALANCHE was their desire to save the planet. That's what they did, too, but not really from Shinra. I think Diamond weapon did that... I think FFVII's story falls undr the Xenogears category that the TC pointed out just as well (if not more) than it falls into a simple Man vs Corporation cliche.lol, Who made Sephiroth? Who pissed him off?

Crisis Core explains it better than FFVII ever did. Imo. Except that Crisis Core is mediocre crap so most people probably never made it through that game. I love FF7 and pretty much every FF that came out, but Crisis Core was just garbage.Um, not at all.
Sure, there's the end goal about saving the world, but 99% of ALL games have that as a goal. Can't fault it for that.
IV: Had to save the world, but that was more of a background thing. You never felt to pressured that the world was on the brink of destruction, a good thing. There was some shocking twists, especially considering how old the game is, and a lot of character backstory.
V: Okay, yeah, major save the world theme, but the pacing of it was well done.
VI: It's less saving the world, more stopping a ruthless dictator. Characters have a lot of personality, troubled pasts, shocking backstories, had a resistance group VS imperial army for first half, which set a good pacing tone.
VII: Again, you weren't saving the world right away. Again a resistance group, but that was mostly just to introduce you to Shinra, and throughthem you learned the dark secrets of some of the characters' pasts, Sephiroth and Cloud struggling to find themselves. Also, ignore people who call Cloud emo. They seem to expect all lead characters to be Kratos-like, when the FF games are actually based off realistic emotions and realistic reactions to events. It's called good writing.
VIII: Some of my favorite characters in an FF game, it starts off as freelance special forces simply going where they're sent, until you uncover a much deeper plot and the secret goal of a military power. The ending boss wasn't as epic or as present as other FF finals, but the story surrounding it was fresh and interesting.
IX: Yep, save the world, but not just from destruction, but from assimilation from another world. Not quite the same, and the story and personal ambitions behind it all are awesome.
X: Not really. It was less about saving the world, more about facing the personal past and overcoming them, and stopping an evil entity who had assaulted the world for 1000 years. Also probably one of the more shocking twists, as well as one of th most endearing love stories in gaming.
XII: Not at all. You're never saving the world in XII, it was more about protecting your homeland. Vayne never intended to destroy th world, but change it to paradise with the ambition to rule over it. The political intrigue sets it apart from the other FF's, much less convoluted.
XIII: Not sure, as I'm trying to stay in the dark about the story as much as possible :P But from what I gather, it's more about personal goals and character relationships and relevance, as well as protecting/saving Serah.
So yes, like most games that feature a story plot, you're saving the world, but FF does it in a more varied and interesting way than most.
That trend started with ff4 I believe. However, its never that black and white. Its always a much deeper lot going on.Are all Final Fantasy games about defeating the evil empire and saving the world? Are there any with a story like Xenogears (uncovering your past or some dark truth) with plot twists and non cliche stories?

Exactly, because no WRPGs have ever had cliched plots. Nuh uh.[QUOTE="Silent-Hal"][QUOTE="Eneru112"]
This is why I play WRPGs.
Eneru112
Name 5 WRPG's with cliched plots.
I'm not gonna get into 5, but Dragon Age: Origins as the most recent is as cliche as they come.
Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, nasty, ugly creatures coming up from the depths, a big badass waiting at the end, the hive mind of the entire evil force. Yup, Lord of the Rings started that, Dragon Age is just one of very many who have continued it. That being said, I loved Dragon Age: Origins, doesn't make it less cliche.

I agree and f you really want to get down to it then there is no such thing as new ideas. Humans just rearrange old ideas.[QUOTE="Khadaj32"][QUOTE="Eneru112"]

Humans just rearrange old ideas.Which is why I prefer JRPG (though enjoy WRPG's too) JRPG's may always focus on the same end goal, but the beginning and middle are always so vastly different. WRPG's are good...just hope you like Tolkien-inspired stories.
Lets see....
I- Save the world, stop evil.
II- Save the world, stop evil, get revenge.
III- Save the world.
IV- Revenge, save the world.
V- Save world.
VI- Uncover past, revege, save world, defeat empire.
VII- Uncover identity, defeat corperation, save world.
VIII- Get the girl, save world.
IX- Save world.
X- Save world.
XI- Waste of life.
XII- Save Ivalice?
XIII- ??? Not sure yet ???
Take a guess with XIII.
True, but hey, it's not the story, it's how you deliver it. It's what makes FF so great.Lets see....

Cant say I disagree.
I just found something interesting...FFXII gets a lot of hate, but it's the second highest scoring FF on metacritic. That's awesome.
Khadaj32
Its not the quality thats the issue with most people, its the change it holds and its faithfulness to past games.
Its getting so much hate because of that.

You might have misread that as XIII, which I'm going by "It's getting so much hate because of that." sounding like I was talking of a modern release. I might be wrong, my bad. But naw, 12. I loved 12, and so many people complain, but it's rated higher than VII and X, which is pretty cool.

I actually did misread it for XIII but the same could be said for XII too.
The change, the drastic deparure from previous game, it didnt sit right with many.
Instead of judging it for what it is they judge it for what it isnt.

The curse of every fanbase of a long-lasting franchise, it seems. And if you think FF fans are bad, I dare anyone to hop over to the Zelda forums and proclaim "TP was better than OoT!" They'd be butchered. And it's a shame, modern releases of franchises should be judged by their own merits, not past iterations.
FF12, Imho, was the best FF they have made since 6. Everything people are complaining about part 13 was done properly in 12. Huge open world that would could venture out, huge towns with tons of npcs to talk to, a veritable crapton of extra quests and gear to obtain and a story that didn't revolve around saving the world! As for non cliche JRPGs I suggest trying out anything in the SMT series. I'm wrapping up my first playthrough of Nocturne and i'll be damned if it doesn't have one of the most unique stories in any game ever!
Final Fantasy 7 and 3 (US) IMO stay away from FF 8 and FF 13 unless you really like Anime Movies than pick up 13Are all Final Fantasy games about defeating the evil empire and saving the world?
