Are large memory cards really necessary if you also own a PS3?

I was just wondering that when I was browsing the Vita and PSP section of PSN on my PS3, and I realized I could just download them to that system, store them there and just transfer them as needed to my Vita and delete them accordingly. Wouldn't that work (just about to buy a Vita btw)?

I realize that if you plan on spending a ton of time away from the house that method might not be very effective, but for short trips out it's not like anyone would watch a bunch of movies, listen to hundreds of mp4s and play four or five games at once.

Wouldn't that make an 8 or 16gb memory card good enough for most situations?

That's a good question, I personally store all my PS1/PSP games on my PS3 Hard-Drive and like you said, I transfer them quickly to PSP when needed. I have 4GB memory and it seems more ten enough.

If you don't have PS3 however then I can see how you might want larger memory stick.

I'm still on the verge when to pick up PS Vita, as I'm waiting on Christmas sales.

i just got.my Vita about a week ago and just picked up a new PS3 as well, wastn sure how all the transffering between the two worked so I picked up a 16 gb memory card and figured Id get a 32gb at some point down the road. I downloaded a show to my vita just to try transffering to the PS3 and must say it is super easy to do and can transfer movies, shows, games, photos, and looks like evem game saves as a backup (havent done tjhe game save part so I cant guarentee that, but Im pretty sure it can). After playing around with it I can that I couldve probably easily gotten by with just an 8gb card.

So doing what your asking you should be able to get by with a 4-8gb. if you can spare the extra Id still recommend the 8 just so you know youll have plenty of space. Not sure the prices in stores but on amazon theres only a $10 difference between the two. Plus I only paid $45 for my 16gb on there with free two day shipping. Hope that helps.

I would recommend at least an 8GB. But if you plan on carrying one or 2 downloadble games at a time 4GB could be enough, just be careful that game sizes vary greatly.

if you don't mind transfering all the time then you dont really need a 16gb or 32gb. get an 8gb if you are mot planning to buy any vita games digitally. i bought a 32gb. definitely not worth the money.

I don't know, I think I have to disagree. I don't own one, but I have a 4 GB, and I dislike having to transfer between my computer and Vita or delete and re-download stuff when I run out of space. I think 32 GB would last me for a long time, and I could store all of my saved data, DLC and downloaded games without too much worry about running out of space. Even then, 32 GB doesn't stretch too far. If you don't buy cartridge games, and want to go entirely digital, you may run into problems with memory limitations on you Vita with even a 32 GB in a year or two, or less. But I guess we won't be seeing a small memory chip that can hold 100 GB for a few more years. XD

Why would you have to re-download anything? Can't you just transfer digital Vita and PSP games back and forth between PS3 and Vita?

I don't have a PS3. I can store them on my laptop, but it is an older machine and doesn't have a massive hard drive, and also I'm not sure how reliable it will be for me. I had a brand new laptop that I bought in mid-late 2010 and it stopped working for me a few months ago. I used the delete-and-then-re-download tactic on the 360 when I had smaller hard drives. It wasn't hard for me to fill a hard drive on a modern console, since games take up so much space these days. The tactic still works out fine on the Vita. You can download a game as many times as you want once you buy it. If you have no space, you can delete stuff you aren't playing right now, and just re-download it again later when you do have space. It's even more efficient if you don't own a PS3 or a computer.

If you plan to get a lot of downloadable games and can afford it, I say get the 32.

If you want to have all your games available to you without having to constantly swap cards or re-download them from PSN or your PS3, it's the only way to go.

clearly you are ok with using your ps3 as a main hub to tranfer games to the vita. you just have to understand that others don't want to bother doing that, they rather have as many games on their cards as possible so that they have more choices. i mean if you really wanted to save money then why dnt yo just buy every game physically?
