I just don't understand why some thinks that platformers are childish.

There's a thread about "R&C TOD or Uncharted". The reason why some picked Uncharted is that R&C is childish.

Also about LBP, some of those who said that they won't get it because they think it's childish.

I think platformers are not childish. IMO, they're for all ages.

My brother has a Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom PS2 game. I'm 21, I tried playing it, I enjoyed it. :)

I agree with that.

I played Mortal Kombat at the age of 8, MGS1 and RE2 at 11, GTA3 at 16.

My younger brother played DMC1 and GTA3 when he was 10.

Nothing affected us. :)

Whats funny about the people who say platforms are childuish is that the best games that came out in the golden era of gaming were PLATFORMS, it 2008 now so its childish? GTFO with that.

Yeah pretty much, Jak and Ratchet & Clank never appealed to me for those reasons in addition to platformers being too simplistic and boring anyways.

Go play I Wanna Be the Guy. Then we'll talk. If you still retain that basic function.

Well, everyone has thier preferences, regardless of age. But, I will say that I got Daxter with my PSP pack and I had to sell it..........I just prefer more serious/realistic type games. I would never knock Daxter or other platformers in that style. but they are not for me.

platformers are like a fix to me o.o when i play them everything that gets me into gaming just clicks automatically and i can't help but keep playing. How one sees platformers as childish is beyond me because really platformers lack the "childish/mature" debate with them since it's not really the maturity of the game, just the feel of it.

Nothing is too childish for me.... well, maybe something, but not platformers and ecpecially not R&C:TOD. I've had mroe fun playing Crash Bandicoot, R&C and other platformers than I have playing many of the 'good' games that are just 'good' because they provide 'gore'.

People that feel platformers are childish are fools, it's OK if some aren't for you but for some to just dismiss them will miss great titles, some peoples first gaming experience was Mario Brothers for NES, it was and still is a great and fun title. For those that feel this way and played Mario, is it too childish to enjoy now? Prince of Persia series is a great platform game, Assassins Creed is a platform game IMO too and in no way are those games childish.

If platform games are childish I don't ever want to grow up and I'm 28.

This is all about your taste in games. Platformers have never been my favourite but never because of them being childish. It is about what you expect from a game. I personally like survival-horror, action-adventure and FPS but I am all excited about LBP right now. Maybe the most "childish" looking game right now, but gets me all hyped up. So labeling a genre "childish" would be wrong in my opinion.

Some platformers are childish, some aren't. Mostly I have just played so many of them that the overall game mechanic feels old and I've lost interest. I am feeling that way with FPS's now too. There really has to be something unique to them for me to be interested.

no but they need definitely nice characters (and colors) to be liked...

i liked Crash Bandicoot on PS1 and i liked Jak&Daxter on PS2, but i didnt like Ratchet&Clank nor Psychonuts ( or whatever its name )

Jak&Daxter is really one of the best platformer series ever for anyone who can enjoy

I tend to liken this debate to anime.

When I tell people I watch it I get one of two reactions

1) It's a cartoon, it's childish.

2) Aren't they those porn cartoons from Japan?

It would be funny if I wasn't actually serious about this. On the one hand people think it's childish, on the other they think they're all perverted. Silly really. Thing is, hobbies like games and anime (I like manga too) get derided by some, as a result we often keep these things to ourselves.

Come on, it's not like we're talking line-dancing here!

Anyway, back to the real point, people look at the graphics of a game and consider that if it looks cartoony it must be for kids. Where this whole idea comes from I don't know. Disney and Dreamworks films work on so many levels for adults and children the lines are getting more and more blurred as to what we adults are allowed to enjoy these days.

As was stated on another thread it seems that if it isn't attracting an M rating it has to be for kids. Poppy cock.

Fun and gameplay spans all genres and graphical styles. Look outside your comfort zone. Not just for Generic Space Marine shooter 9000.

I don't care if a game looks childish. Childish isn't a bad thing and people who say it is are arrogant.

I have high hopes that lbp will be an AAA title that will be a very fun game no matter how much people call it "childish".

That was my topic, I was choosing between the two. In the end, I got R&C TOD, man is that game fun! Not regretting it one bit:). Platformers doesn't mean it is a childish game. My very first game was a platformer, Spyro The Dragon on the PSX was the first, and one of the most best games I have ever played.:) I love Insomniac.:D
