Hi all, I own an old PS3 "fat" system, and recently bought The Walking Dead Season 1 on blu-ray. The video plays fine on my Panasonic blu-ray player, but when I try to play it on my PS3 I get a message "This video cannot be played" followed by a number in parantheses. Why is this? The video is not of a foreign region therefore I see no problem as to why it shouldn't play. Are some newer Blu-rays unable to be played on an older model PS3? keep in mind, I bought this PS3 about 4 to 5 years ago, when it was available as the 40G model. Last year I swapped a 250G drive in it. thanks.

As far as I know... no. It should be perfectly able to play EVERYTHING.

Do you have an updated FW, don't you?

I haven't come across one, which is great!

It even plays my Alien: Anthology Blu-rays. None of my other Blu-Ray players can, even with updates.

It should be able to play everything but i know that there have been problems with certain firmware updates and bluray playback, for example older copies of Sunshine automatically turn on the video commentary after an update a year or two ago.

the ps3 is/ or should be the best blu ray player there is, if u look around on the internet alot of the people say that the ps3 is the best, so it should play everything, it may need updating as all blu ray players seem to need to. i'm guessing this is the wierd age were living in when u buy a blu ray player and it wont play certain blu rays, what is the world coming to what happened to just buying a player what was already fully equipped to play all.

You said it. I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing patches for blu ray movies...

Well, I have recently updated to the latest FW update. I also bought a new HDMI cable. It was a cheap one, cost me like 4 bucksand I got it atAmazon but the video comes through fine. I can't imagine that a blu-ray can't play due to an HDMI cable. Granted, that is the only blu-ray movie I have tried, if other ones won't work I would place the HDMI cable as the culprit. I'll also google the error code or paste it on here when I get home later.

Was the best player, newer stand-alone BD players run rings around the PS3.

The PS3 is probably one of the most compatible players out there. However there have been some specific blu-ray discs that have had problems, but it's more the fault of the programmers of the discs than the PS3. I've had several discs not play on my standalone player, but they run fine on my PS3.

I've read the issue has to do with the java-programming build into blu-ray discs. Fox has had a few discs that notriously freeze at startup because of bad programming, also there have been some 2006-2007 discs that must have been "bad pressings" because they no longer work on *ANY* blu-ray player - and the problem is widespread to basically every model of blu-ray player. DVD's had a similar issue in their early days, hopefully it's not a sign that blu-ray discs will have short lifespans as I'd like to think I've have mine for 10-20 years. (just like I've already had some of my DVD's for over 10 years).

Anway the best place to look for information on a particular disc is probably blu-ray.com, search there forums and see if there is an issue. It's not a super widespread problem (probably not even 1% of titles have issues), but it's been known to happen.

Maybe. But I would tend to think the PS3 has the least amount of "compatibility issues" out there. Although I no longer use it as my primary blu-ray player (more of an effort to conserve the life of my PS3, than it's performance). Anyway I never had a single disc unplayable on my PS3 when I was using it as a movie player, but the 2 or 3 times I had a disc fail to load on my standalone, it worked just fine in my PS3.

Haven't had a problem with my stand-alone, I just cant use the PS3 because it doesn't support DTS HD-MA and the bit rate is limited, but thats not really relevant.

I just meant that in the sense that PS3 has fewer issues running discs that have "Java loading issues", that seems to be the issues with standalones that are most common to make the disc completely unplayable. It's just bad programming, and maybe the PS3 just has a more capable operating system/software to overcome programming flaws. I don't remember which discs wouldn't play on my standalone, I know Casino was one of them but there were a couple of others. It would basically just get stuck on the "loading" screen and never actually get to the menu. Other people claimed it would load after like 10 minutes, but I gave it like 30 just for the hell of it and never worked. I then put it in my PS3 and it started right up and played right away without issue, it was basically a similar story with each of them.

I would just say its because the OS is more lenient, but its a bit funny because Java on the web browser is useless.

It's not any of that. It's just because the PS3 operates DIFFERENTLY than a standalone BD Player...
