Are the previous Jak and Daxter games needed to understand Daxter?

This game looks interesting. But I never played the other games before it. Is it required to understand Daxter?

Not really. It just helps to explain Jak 2.

Not really but if you want to understand some of the other characters that appear in the game then yes but you should definitely get the other Jak and daxter games they're great.
