Well, this may seem like an odd question, but I was wondering if there are any games out there that have a sad storyline. I don't mean depressing like in GTA IV, but rather one where you actually care about the characters. Like in Shadow of the Colossus (yes, I know the last guardian is coming out in 20 years, just in time for the ps7) there was a connection with the main character that made you care about him and the world of the game. I just got done watching Black Swan again, and it seems odd that games don't have that type of dark storyline, or at least not anymore. So basically, are there any games that either have a sad or emotionally engaging story with gameplay that is more than quick time sequences (that's you Heavy Rain).

Nier

The music, the characters, and the world is just so amazing. Yet at the same time it has some truly sad moments since you actually care for these characters. And the ending is just...****ing amazing.:| Not to mention it has one of the most beautiful end credit songs ever.

well out of all the ones mentioned Nier seems the most interesting, but do you have to get all the endings to understand the game? I tried playing red dead 3 times, and I had little incentive to finish it. Currently playing Infamous, and the story neat for the type of game it is. As for Dragon Age, I have been wanting to play it, but was wondering if the combat system gets boring after a while. I'm pretty confident it will have me caring about the characters since I played ME2 and it's the same developers.

I'd say Mass Effect 2, depending on how you play it.
I don't get why on earth people are saying inFamous..

Altiar25

ok, it's not just me wondering why infamous is coming up, especially since i'm playing it and it isn't at all. For some reason nearly half my team died in ME2, at least Kasumi lived since she was one of the few with a personality.

Well, in Assassin's Creed II the main character ...SPOILER... lost his entire family. And the game is driven by revenge.

Nice, I was looking at Mafia 2 (first one was classic). How was COD4, I never played it, but it didn't look like a story type of game.

I was totally going with Heavy Rain too... for something with action and story? Maybe Bioshock for me. L.A. Noire also got pretty heavy toward the end.

Silent Hill 2, Amnesia The Dark Descent and Rule Of Rose are guaranteed to decrease your serotonin level.

Also, Dragon Age 2 made me cry. I just couldn't fathom the fact that the once great Bioware had stooped to such lows with that game, a truly heart breaking experience.

Definitely NIER, that game is still easily the saddest game I have ever played (brought me to tears numerous times) and if it helps any, the characters (who you truly start caring for after a while) are quite nicely fleshed out and memorable. I can't think of anything else that beats NIER though, even rather sad games like Red Dead Redemption and Heavy Rain felt like children's fairy tales compared to it.

Nier is about the only one from this generation I can think of. It had great characters that I really cared about, and bad things happened to them. Kainé especially - her entire life was tragic.

Other than that, just Metal Gear Solid 3 on the PS2. Nothing sad about the game really, but then they decided to add on that half-hour bummer of an epilogue for some reason.

Nier wins the saddest game for me...you get connected to all the characters, and the soundtrack is great. I don't really want to spoil the story so you'll have to play it to find out why...

If I had to choose a second I'd say FFX.

Infamous 1

Dragon Age Origins

FireFox67

Agreed, but I'd replace Infamous 2 with infamous 1. Infamous 2 has prolly one of the best, most simple endings ever - no cliffhangers, bittersweet (good ending only).

Dragon definitely - you get attached to the characters, and the ending makes you realize how well you've come to know your party - BUT with both games there are not enough "sad" moments displaced throughout, they only have sad endings

well out of all the ones mentioned Nier seems the most interesting, but do you have to get all the endings to understand the game? I tried playing red dead 3 times, and I had little incentive to finish it. Currently playing Infamous, and the story neat for the type of game it is. blueboxdoctor
No, but the new game+ starts off from a later point in the game and replaying this part will yield so much more understanding. It's not only the ending that is different but also a lot during the second playthrough. I personally like it and it didn't feel very repetitive to me and I very rarely replay games!
I'd also put my vote on Nier, definitely one of my favorite stories of gaming in my opinion. I rarely feel captured by a story this much.

Bioshock and Bioshock 2, Red Dead Redemption, Nier, Shadow Of The Clossous, Heavy Rain.
