Basically, I haven't touched my PSP in about 10-12 months because it has not been working when I insert a UMD game inside. From what I know, it lets me browse through music and everything else, but it seems that whenever I place a disc inside the PSP, it makes "scratchy" noises and doesn't load the game, in turn freezes. I had this same problem a couple of times before this current one and only had to leave my dusty PSP for 2-3 months and it somehow revived but now it's been almost a year and it is still not working, I'm guessing this eventual result is chronical. Could anybody suggest what I should do? This was bought late 2005 as a "giga pack" version from GAME. I tried calling Sony today but was held for about 5 minutes and had to eat my breakfast so I might try sometime again. Do you think they will offer me some kind of exchange? If so, do you recon I can convince them enough to exchange the new "Slim & Lite" one for this one? Possibly with around £10-£20?

Note: The PSP (appearance-wise) is in mint condition, the performance is ok, apart from this core problem and a loose game inserter thingy. Also note that this problem was ever so natural and I have only dropped this PSP once, very lightly back in 2005, I did not provoke this problem in any way shape or form.

Thank you.

Hopefully it's still under warranty. Go to the Sony web site and find the nearest approved Sony dealer. Then give them a call and see if they will fix it for free. If not, you may just want to get a new PSP slim.

Let me ask when you're using the xmb is it as slow as hell? and are you using one of those custom firmware(so you could download games to your psp aka pirate)? if you are using custom firmwares try accessing the recovery menu by holding down the R trigger down while turning on the psp. Try to explore the menu until you find the one for the xmb speed or something, forgot the exact term. It should be on a default level you might find it in a lower level like 20 mhz. Just change it to default and it should be working again. Friend of mine experienced the same problem. If your using an original firmware try asking sony how to access the menu for the xmb speed or they will just ask you to drop it a center to loot some cash off you. Good Luck

Call Sony and see what they can do. I think I had the same problem as you awhile back with UMDs not reading. All i did was call Sony and they Repaired mine for free even though it was out of warrenty by a couple of weeks. So you never know.

So if it is out of warranty ask them about maybe getting a discount on a slim or some sort of deal you may be able to get threw Sony.

The problem is your UMD discs and not your PSP. If the clear plastic part of your disc has been pushed in and is rubbing the disc then you will here the scratchy noises and and the game will not be recognized. Try popping out the clear plastic to its original position and be careful how you store them.

try letting the battery die ALL THE WAY!!

Then charge it for a couple of days to make sure it is fully charged. Then try using the UMD again. The same thing happened to my brother and he was pissed. He started using the interent and stuff and then the unit died. He charged it for a couple of days and ever since then it has been working fine.

I doubt you'll get anything for free now, considering it's age.
