Depends what game you like
Assassins Creed= Slow paced, repetitive, but good story
Ninja Gaiden Sigma=Fast paced, average story, not that repetitive and awesome fighting
ninja gaiden, without a doubt. the controls are responsive. the combat is fast and brutal. the game doesnt shy away from a good difficulty level. its a must buy assuming you havent played one of the older versions.
assassins creed is incredibly overrated on this site. the gameplay is boringly formulaic. each time you enter a city, its: find the map points, do the same sidequests, kill the target. they never mix up these elements. the targets are never have any variation. once you gather your case, you just find the target and stab him. thats it. theres no replayability on the ps3 version. there are tons of flags to collect, but no incentive to do so (360 version gives you achievements atleast. the ps3 version wont even go as far as to pat you on the back for your trouble). the story starts off well but the cliffhanger ending will leave a bad taste in your mouth. though its not all bad. the game is pretty and the free-running system is both innovative and fun. it just doesnt have much else backing it up.
AC just frustrates me, how did they mess up such a great template for a game. NGS has a frustrating camera for me. They're both good rentals. You should also consider DMC4.
Neither, to be honest.
Rent 'em both. I own both and kind of regret it. If I wasn't a packrat I would trade them in.
AC is sweet, the story is pretty cool, the environments are amazing and the sandbox elements are wicked - running across rooftops and climbing everything in the area is an awesome gameplay element. The combat is kind of fun, but it gets repetitive in a hurry, and the missions are incredible mundane and repetitive. Overall the game has elements of greatness and elements of suck, and they come together in a fairly uneven package. A lot of potential, but a pretty unfinished game imo.
NGS is fun, but completely repetitive, to the point that you see the same exact levels 5-10 times in a game. You will find yourself backtracking and walking through the same areas over and over, killing the same bosses, hearing the same music. The story is completely lame, the Rachel parts are clunky and thrown together and the whole presentation (music, sound FX, level design, menu screens) are way last-gen. Overall I had fun and don't regret sinking time into it, but it's not something I would buy again now that there are better games to play on the 3.
The obvious answer here is BUY GTA, you won't need another game for a while, but if you're dead set on a game that involves swords, go for Heavenly Sword or Devil May Cry 4, I found them both to be much more enjoyable than NGS or AC, regardless of what the reviews here say. Heavenly Sword is unbelievably cinematic and has character and uniqueness oozing from every pore, while DMC4 is more about being hardcore and demolishing your enemies with as big a combo as you can manage. It's a game for the hardcore that can still be enjoyed by the novice. The fighting system is insanely fun, the story is actually quite good for a game like this, and though it's short and rather repetitive, it seemed to beckon me back to play it again and again. Conversely, I got so sick of backtracking in NGS that I totally lost interest in the game and STILL haven't even finished it, which is partially why I haven't traded it in, come to think of it.
My recommendations: GTAIV (I recommend this for everything, even the common cold or measles), Heavenly Sword, or Devil May Cry 4.
Which are you more in the mood for: Action or Adventure? Ninja Gaiden is all action, and Assassin's Creed is all adventure.
