Hello everyone, I've recently taken the plunge and ordered a PS3 and have a question. I have an older receiver with no HDMI input, and am wondering what the next best audio output would be. My receiver is capable of optical and coaxial digital, so I assume it would be one of those. Would there be any lag problems between audio and video if I have HDMI going to a TV, and one of the other audio types going to my receiver? Maybe I should ask on avsforum but I thought I'd try here, seeing as how its PS3 specific. Thanks for any advice. Also for any interested in getting a good deal on one, I got mine on sonystyle.com after signing up for their Visa CC, and they have FREE shipping right now on EVERYTHING. The Visa deal got me 150 bucks credit after a 299 purchase, so with free ship it works out my PS3 will cost 350 + tax. This with the 5 movies was too good to pass up :)
I'm using HDMI for video and Optical for sound, no lag or anything like that, sounds great. Would like to have the audio from HDMI, but didn't want to spend 300 extra bucks for HDMI switching on my reviever..
if you choose to run yr audio through your receiver first then it will not run through the tv.... but you can run audio from tv to receiver to hear both.. but i found that to bypass the tv and go straight to reciever gives a better non tainted sound quality. but that was through standard av connections
The optical sounds great, and has full dolby surround. Its what I too have to use since I have no HDMI capable equipment. I don't think the PS3 supports coaxial, although I think in reality its the same signal as optical, just different transmission medium.
