When I got my PS3, it would only output audio through HDMI or optical, but not at the same time.  If I wanted one or the other, I'd have to go into audio settings and change it.  So, I have just left it on optical and turned my receiver on whenever I used my PS3.

I just noticed while spinning around in the XMB that the clicks were coming out of my TV.  It looks like 1.32 update now allows audio through HDMI and optical at the same time.

They really need to announce things like this.  Instead, all they say is fixes network this or that.  Unless of course this was fixed earlier and I just didn't notice??

Umm....this doesnt really help since you'll only want to have it through one in the first place, optical i'd imagine is for your surround sound and hdmi is for video. I have the same setup

You ideally want HDMI for sound and video , and optical for nothing.

I don't always want to turn my receiver on for doing stuff with my PS3. I don't need to hear everything in 5.1 surround sound. Now I can just turn on my PS3 and have sound through my HDTV without having to change audio settings. Then when I go into a game or movie, I can turn on my receiver.

Yes, but if you want 5.1 or better surround sound, you need a receiver that supports HDMI. I do not have one of those.

Oh, well the prices of HDMI receivers are dropping fairly fast. It wouldn't cost much for you to make a huge upgrade in your setup.

Yeah, the bad thing is my current receiver is only about 14-15 months old. I bought it when I got my HDTV. I'll probably upgrade both of them in like 3-4 years. Just imagine the A/V goodness that will be out by then. :D

I was looking for this fix myself. I dont always want to have my home theatre running because of sound issues where i live. It would be easier to have both running instead of having to switch back and forth each time i want to switch sound output. I too do not have a HDMI reciever, maybe one day i will upgrade to a nice 7.1 system, mine is fine for now.

I have a related question but I'm not using HDMI, instead I have my PS3 hooked up via component cables straight to my HDTV (it's a 65" but was made before HDMI started to catch on) with the analog audio hooked up as well. I also have a optical cable running from the PS3 to my reciever. The problem is I can't have sound coming from both my TV and my reciever (I usually have my reciever on mute during late hours when I don't want to use surround sound), it's either one or the other. Do I really have to go into the menu every time and switch the output? Did I miss something or is this just how the PS3 handles audio?

Most people don't have receivers capable of HDMI so we run the sound through the optical cable. This update would be great since it allows me not to turn on the receiver etc if I just want to play for a little bit and people are sleeping in the house etc. I won't get home to check this for 2 weeks, but there seems to be some that says it works and others that say it doesn't. b11051973 - did you go beyond 1.32 update? If you stoped there it may have been fixed and then removed in later updates...........
