So, I would assume the average life span of a 60gig PS3 is about a year and 8 to 10 months?

Just had my second YLOD, killed by Oblivion (first time, crashed and beeped yesterday, used it today *just fine* UNTIL I played Oblivion again and got YLOD)

My last PS3 ran at a year and ten months. This time, a year and eight months. What a piece of garbage. I'm not forking another cent over to this crap company because of their faulty hardware. If I can't fix this myself, to hell with it all. The quality of games and hardware has become cheap and unreliable.

/end rant

its not sony's fault, its your fault. sony isn't taking care of the ps3, you are. ps3's last depending on how YOU take care of it. my ps3 lasted 2 years and never showed any signs of ylod before it got stolen

My launch one konked out 3 years in. I hear loads of new YLOD cases all the time. All over the internet. Some people like to think it doesn't exist or it's only happening to a select few people but thats quite simply not the case. They only realize until it actually happens to them.

It's hard to tell what the average is but it's going to varie from person to person based on how much they actually use their fat PS3 models. Sooner or later though it's going to bite the dust. That much is true. You're best off just getting a PS3 Slim Denji. It's been known for a while now that fat PS3 models are borderline unreliable.

Sorry to hear it.

I've had my 60GB since launch and I've never had any trouble with it, but I realize I don't play it as much as most people do. Maybe 2-3 hours a week maximum, a 1/2 hour at a time.

I doubt it was the PS3s' fault... my launch Day 1 60G has been going strong... and games don't cause systems to YLOD... sounds more like that you don't take care of your stuff... especially since you killed more than one of them.

I wish I could, but it's cheaper for me to fix it. If fixing can work, I can deal with the clock work as long as I have a solution. All of my money is literally tied up well into around this time of next year :? I've never had a console like this before. I've owned consoles since the 80's, since Atari 2600. Not one of them has crapped out on me even once during it's marketing era. I've never had to replace anything. This is the kind of crap I expected from PCs, but I felt "consoles" were my gaming haven.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but what I've found consistent was it lasts over a year and a half for me. But I use it as my media hub (as they market it) for movies and games. I don't really do anything else with it and gaming hours are off and on.

I don't really understand why people automatically assume "you don't take care of it" and feed you some idiot party line like they know what they're talking about

Now this shows how little you know about the YLOD and what the common cause of it is.

Still have my launch and have yet to hear of anyone I know IRL having their PS3 break down on 'em. Seems like you're a bit unlucky to me that's all.

I bought my 60 gig on March 5, 2007 and it died on February 25, 2011. I got it fixed through gophermods.com and got my exact console back.

That sucks! :( I had my 60 GB PS3 since September 2007 and it still works. In fact, I sent in my PS3 for preventive maintenence to extend the life of my 60 GB PS3. They changed the thermal pads, thermal paste and cleaned up my PS3 and Blu-ray drive and they inspected the motherboard for any potential problems. The company I have sent it to was Endless Electronics and they are really good! They fix PS3's for a good deal. They are much cheaper than Sony's repair and they offer lifetime warranty. Maybe you should look in to them. I highly recommend them! :)

My 60gb lasted almost 4 yrs I guess. And to the people who blame the owners all I can say is keep your black paint in the can. I had my fatty resting vertically ON TOP of my stereo cabinet, breathing lovely, I dusted it every so often, and I would even give it breaks when I would go on marathon gaming sessions. So before you point the finger at ALL users please know what you're talking about :) My fatty (RIP baby) was killed right after watching a DVD. It...just *sniff* ...wouldn't turn on anymore :(

Mine lasted 2 years. But most systems tend to only last 2-3 years if they are being played on a regular basis.

I still have my 60 gig that was purchased in the begining of 2007. I changed the thermal paste and cleaned it out some time back. I never shut my system down and keep it standing vertical on top of a entertainment center.

Nah a system should last way more than a measly 3 years. My fat PS2 is still alive 10 years and running and so is my Dreamcast. Even a PC can last a good decade.

The only person I know that has had a 60gb PS3 go YLoD out of 5 60gb systems I personally know. All 5 systems were bought within the first month of launch also, is my wife's nephew Ben which YLoD'd 3 months ago. About 4 years of use before it did it. But he is also the dirtiest house keeper of the 5 people with them also. He never cleaned the dust from the vents in that 4 years. We told him he wasn't very smart to do that and he ignored us.

Yep! Most people still have their fat models. It's like every other electronic device, it can last you almost forever, a few months, weeks, days.

My Playstation 3 60GB was made in February 2007. 2 months before the last 60Gigers rolled of theessembly line. It has not given me any problems. The failure rate of all PS3 phat models is 9%

I have never kept my playstation 3 (Phat models) in a closedentertainment cabinet. The60giger & the 40Giger (which Isold) never have given me any problems. Plus I had always unplugged my gaming consoles after use.

Sony makes good products so far the life span is 2007-2011 for my PS360Giger. No Ylod thus far.

Im still on my second one its lasted longer. The first one did die within 2 years. This one i fear is gonna die soon (i know i say this everytime someone makes these threads) it keeps freezing up on me. Once during infamous 2 and twice now with mass effect 2. I just hope i beat it soon before it happens. Thats my greatest fear. Not beating a long story game before it dies. Anyways i thought you was a doubter that it wasn't sony's fault and that it was the owners fault. I know this is mean but i wish everyone would get it just to end this "its the misuse of the owner" Prolly just depends on how much you actually use the phat 60.

I beg to differ. I fired up my old (fat) PS2 just now, countless gaming hours, eight years old (possibly nine) and it still works. It was also my main DVD player. My PS3 can't even last two years, what does that tell ya? Not to mention, left in the care of some family members for some two years, dusty, didn't take care of it much and they were smokers. Still reliable. (even though firing it up, took a little bit for the disk to read at first)

Anyhow, I'm going to fix mine. They've got a step by step YLOD repair video on Youtube.:D

mine lasted from february after launch to last memorial day. I just got done watching a dvd when it passed away. I then bought a new one the next day at Target. My mom let me use her red card and her special shopping day, and ontop of that her discount. That was really cool of her.

I felt that I got my money's worth, beacause I played the living daylights out of that thing. I used it for gaming and watching movies, and I really like movies. Anyway the my point was that it was three years old.

Funny thing is that i traveled to europe for the whole moth of july and left my ps3 turned off , i come back , turn it on, and it YLODs on me ,it's really unpredictable , and i had changed the thermal paste already to prevent this thing from happening but apparently it didn't work , anyways , just got myself a slim and i'm waiting for the 750 gigs hdd to arrive so i can enjoy the awesomeness again.

queenster08

games do cause the ylod

play games = ps3 making heat

heat kills electronics therefore games kill ps3s

everything dies from from wear and tear eventually thats a fact of life

also i had a launch 60gb die 4 years in and i never had a console die on me before

I still have my launch 60 gb and have even changed out the HDD. Infact I have purchased every Sony console at launch and have never had to purchase a replacement unit. Not sure if I'm just lucky, if I take care of my equipment any differently or if Sony just has a good track record with releasing good equipment but I am happy with all my Sony purchases....
