No. Divx is is a Codec...A compressor/decompressor. Divx is the compressor that was used to encode the video file and avi is a container for that video file. As long as said video file is an avi container that contains a divx encoded movie then it should work. Some avi's use other codecs to compress. Those may or may not work.

i havent encountered an avi i couldnt play on ps3. most avi's used divx/xvid anyways.

I have come across a few AVIs that won't play on the PS3, I think they were encoded with the H.264 codec - not completely sure but that codec and DivX seem to be the most popular.

The PS3 can support avi files after a certain date [not sure when]. Previously the avi files use a different encoding so it can't play older avi files, but newer ones it can.

As long as your files are new, or alternatively you could re-encode them using the new encoder, you'll be able to play them on the PS3. Sigh... thats what they get for only uploading the newest codec and not having backwards compatability. Sounds awfully familiar doesn't it?
