I plan to do this soon. I know to use the backup utility and insert a USB, external hard drive, etc., but is there anything else I need to know? Does the storage device need to have any kind of special format? Thanks.

If you use an external HDD it needs to be formatted to Fat32.

Well other than what's already been stated. Do be very aware that you will only get a perfect backup of your data if plan on using it w/ the same PS3 you have now. If you change PS3s there's a possibility you may lose some copy-protected things--THIS INCLUDES SOME GAME SAVES. Like I said if you're not changing your whole system & you're just doing a backup, then no worries; but speaking from personal experience I just thought to mention that to you.
