About 6 months ago I was able to buy a 320gb external drive for around $70. Given the way technology goes, its probably cheaper today.

Can't tell you how long the backup took. I started it, then went to bed. It was done when I got up in the morning.

Oh yeah. Forgot to add that 320gb is gobs plenty of space. You could probably get away with a 250gb if thats more in your price range.

Damn, I was hoping to get around $30. I don't need that much space. I got a 80 GB hard drive, but before I transfer I plan on deleting all my stuff in the game data utility and all my demos. I can re- download them when I get my new PS3. Also I don't understand that it has to be formatted to fat32 how you know if it is formatted to fat32??

Just go to newegg.com they should be real cheap on there or your local walmart they aren't too pricey. All what I did when I backed up my data was plug it into my system and go to backup system and it did everything on its own. It took roughly around 2 hours because I was backing up a lot of information. When you restore all the data it will look exactly how you left it psn games and all. The only difference you will see is that your harddrive has more space now.

You won't really need an external hard drive if you're just backing up game saves, themes and system settings. If the bulk of your space is on games/PSN content, you can just redownload/reinstall them for free and you can slap all the important stuff you can't redownload on a USB stick or something. Shave it down and you don't really need to buy another hard drive to back it up.
