backing up save files?!?!

ive been hearing horror stories of people whos ps3 no longer work on them. i have extensive game progression saved on my ps3 and i want to trasnf these files to a ext hard drive i have. is this possible? and if so can someone explain how i do it

Just insert a thumb drive in the USB slot of your PS3 and then go to your saves folder on the XMB. Move down to a save file and I believe you press triangle to bring up the 'Copy' option. Select 'Copy' and then direct the copy to the thumb drive. Hope this helps.

^Yep, just use a thumb drive. I copy all save files (Apart from those damn copy protected ones) to a thumb drive every couple of weeks just in case.

backup your PS3 regularly but even for copy protected saves like RE5, SF4, KZ2, etc you are out of luck if ur system dies. I went through that same thing and I still got to redo everything in SF4 and KZ2. Thumb drives can not back up protected saves at all. Only the backup process does that

I connected my new 1 TB WD MY Book Essential external hard drive to my Ps3 but it does not recognise it......any suggestions if FAT32 installed can format the external drive ?
