I see a lot of people demanding backward compatibility. Some people begging for it. And others complaining about the complainers, and arguing against it.

So here's a poll. Vote now.

I'm neutral on this. For me, it's not that big of a deal to keep an old system hooked up if there are games I'm playing on it. I see how it could be for others though.

At the beginning of the generation, its damn near crucial. Mid to end of a consoles lifespan, when it comes into its own, not so much. Case in point, I picked up a PS3 with BC about the time MGS4 came out, maybe played PS2 games on it 3 times.

I bought my PS3 to play PS3 games, while its nice having backwards compatibility its certainly not that essential to me. It was great when the PS3 first came out because there wasn't many PS3 games and you could play your entire PS2 collection on it! Now though its not needed at all in the grand scheme of things, recently ive actually been playing my PS2 alot, blow the dust off it, hook-up the cables and im golden! Only takes a few minutes to set-up. If you dont have a PS2 then just buy one! You can find them really cheap now. I actually wish Sony would release a new PS2 with a wireless controller and the smoothing options that you get on PS3! I agree that BC is important at launch but 2-3 years down the line its redundant.

I would have liked for my PS3 to have backwards compatibility, but I decided I could live without it.

If having BC is going to drive the cost of the system up, then no I dont want it. PS2 compatability drives the costs up, now the PS4 should be able to have PS3 compatability with no cost ramp because both systems will be using blue ray, but they wont beable to add PS2 with out a cost increase.

Stupid poll doesnt show my ampersands...

I think software compatibility is not such a big deal. Even when I think about PS2 (the pioneer of backward compatibility) I only rarely played any ps1 games on it... mostly just Street Fighter Alpha 3... still play it on PS3 once in a blue moon. But the nicest thing about the PS2's backward compatibility was the peripheral support... specifically controllers. You could use you're DualShock 1 controllers even with PS2 games.

Of course with the rise of wireless and USB, keeping the old DualShocks around on the PS3 was not a great idea, even though I'm sure a lot of us searched the web after getting our PS3s to find out if there was any way to use our old controllers on it. Of course after getting used to wireless bluetooth controllers I don't think I would ever use a wired controller again.

With the "PS4", I don't expect anything, and don't care so much about last gen software support; but keeping Dual Shock 3 support would be super terrific happy times. Same could go for the move, etc. Although, a better, HD, or even 3D webcam device would be a welcome upgrade to the PS3 Eye.

I think it is better at the launch, but I'm usually not one to get a platform right away anyway. But I'm neutral to it, can't say I really used it at all, but I don't care if its there for others. Plus I think that Sony and other companies are addressing the BC with HD and other collections being released. I think those are good solutions because I'm able to play games from last gen with slightly better updates.

I want backward compatibility.. especially at launch when there are barely any games for the system.. I'd want to be able to play the games that are still being released on the older system, as well as being able to go back and play older games I missed out on originally. I never bothered playing PS2 games on my 60gb ps3, but if I was to pick up a PS4 any time around launch I would play PS3 games on it for sure.

When the PS3 was released I demanded BC, by now I've given up and got used to not having (previous gen-) BC. Still'd really like it though.
