do you think sony should release a patch or an update for free or that you can pay for for backwards compatibility with ps2 games for people like me with the new 80 gb

Yes.But I don't see it happening any time soon.I really have no clue what sony is planing with this strategy of make a console, then take it off the market.I thought it would have been cheaper to just keep the ones that were already being sold in the first place but lower the price.

They should, but its can't ever happen, you'd need hardware, not software

Hmm, I've heard mixed things. I've heard from some that Sony will probably release a patch that will allow backwards compatibility for PS2 games on a limited setting. I've also heard that PS2 emulation is entirely dependent on the proper hardware being in place and none of the new PS3 consoles have that. So I dont know. I do hope they can release a patch for backwards compatibility (I have one of the newer 80gb models), that'd be nice.

true but alot of people[Like myself]would love to just play our PS2 games in our PS3.It is not our fault that we did not get to snag a NEW 20.60.or 80 gig PS3 when availible. It makes no sense that they would take something like that out of the PS3s.Yes.I know you should be more worried about playing PS3 games in your PS3,but it is also a nice feeling of being able to play your older PS2 titles aswell.

Yeah I know they took it out because of sales and what not.But what I want to know is this,is it really easier for them to just keep coming out with console after console none of which have the original features of the old PS3s[BC,4 USB ports etc]

wrong, half the consoles with bc are done by software.

I know, this whole discussion has been discussed a bunch of times. It is possible for Sony to do it.I just hope that they will stop worrying about which console they can take off the market next and put more thought into something like this.

I was lucky enough to buy a 60Gb on launch with B.C.,which with the UK version, runs PS1+2 games using emulation(has no Emotion chip). So i don't see why Sony couldn't do a sofware patch for 80GB PS3s?

If you think of it, they'd kinda revolutionate if they could really accomplish making software of hardware. That would make the console cheaper and thinner. And if they could do that to some other stuff to, that would be really revolutionairy.

I too wish they would release BC in the future for the PS3. I'm eager to move next gen and this is a bit of a concern for me. I DO have a ps2 but being able to play PS2 games on PS3 would add extra incentive to move on finally.

if they release any ps2 games on psn then they'll have to do it, because there are some ps1 games. Maybe, one day they'll decide to put ps2 up, mgs series would of been such a good idea as a trilogy pack, and would of performed really well. They saw no need for this and released a limited 3 pack in america, bad idea.

I don't think Sony will plan on bringing this feature back they even denied this rumor about bringing it back at TGS.

i think that once Sony stops making the PS2 they'll put full hardware BC back into the PS3, because it would boost PS3 sales and ppl looking at a used PS2 which sony wouldn't make money on might buy a new PS3 instead

For the love of... NO. The 80gb PS3's with PS2 BC DO still have the PS2 graphics synthesizer on board. The Emotion Engine is the only part that is software emulated. We (you, not me since I have a launch model) are SOL as far as pure software PS2 emulation is concerned. I don't think the PS3 is capable of it, since I don't believe there is even a full speed PC version available.

no, the new winter SKUs are not capable of PS3 BC. The reason being that they took out the ps2 CPU (Emotion Engine) and the ps2 GPU (Graphics Synthesizer), so it's completely incapable of rendering ps2 software. At least that's from my understanding.
