Is there still a PS3 i can buy in a store that has backwards compatiblility? I need to know which one._Dielan_Nope, you'll have to wait till June 12th for the MGS4 bundles. Or find a used 20, 60 or 80GB.

I don't care as long as it plays SocomCA really.

The current PS2 support is completely in software and is hit and miss for now. I'm sure they will update the emulator with later firmware releases which should expand its abilities somewhat for the big Sony and Square games (Final Fantasy, God of War etc), but if you have obscure titles odds are they will either work well or they won't. Sony is planning on bringing PS2 games to PSN so whichever games (again, likely big Sony & square titles..and maybe a few others) are chosen, support of those in the emulator will likely be improved. Sony can easily give the 40GB PS2 BC with a firmware update so I think its crazy they won't. I guess its one more reason to sucker people out of an extra 100 dollars for a console that has no performance advantage over the 40GB..(250GB harddrives can be had for 60-80 dollars).
On the bright side, PS1 emulator works great on them all!!!! dust off the old Final Fantasys! :P

since u said PS2 games will be on PSN, u think sony wants to make ppl re buy PS2 games which is a slap to the face.

Two points.
1. Sony sees Microsoft making money hand over fist with its Xbox classics line. People who have the discs don't need to buy. Those who don't can buy if they want to play. Its not about slapping anyone in the face, its about diversifying and realizing that not everyone bought God of War and Metal Gear Solid 3. It costs Sony nothing except server space to sell them on PSN.
2. You talk about Sony slapping fans, but I think its BC that the 40GB can't have BC when its just software. They get people to spend 100 more dollars on 40 more GB, some card slots, and Software BC. 250GB+ harddrives can be had for around 100 dollars and pc card readers work fine on the PS3. Hell, the 80GB doesn't even come with HD cables. Where is the value in that? (the MGS4 bundle is a good deal..i'm not complaining about that). Sony said the PS3 will always be a 2 SKU console, but i think its a sucker maker. I wouldn't even be surprised if the 80 GB are repackaged 90nm decks.
Anyways, i'll just buy another PS2 at xmas before they get pulled off the shelves and love life with my nice cool 65nm 40GB PS3 with no BC....
Happy playing!

Actually, it is NOt completely software. The 80GB model (last model that has BC) still has the PS2's GPU integrated in it's chipset. So it is only partial software emulation.

The 80GB has software emulation. The 60GB and 20GB models were the only ones to ever have the Emotion engine (PS2 chip). The new 80GB SKU that comes with MGSIV will contain the same software emulation that the previous 80GB had.

"the North American 80 GB model also excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip.[55] However, it still keeps the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU.[56] "
As I said before, it is not completely software emulation. The only thing it emulates is the EE while still utilizing the GPU.
Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying it doesn't have software emulation at all. Just that it's not completely software as you had said in your earlier post. Another source: http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7441&Itemid=2
"The 60GB model in Europe and the recently-released 80GB PS3 in the US differ in that they don't possess the Emotion Engine, but still had a "modified" version of the PS2 Graphics Synthesizer chip. So European and 80GB PS3s in fact rely on emulation provided by software and hardware working in tandem--not just software. "
Cool I didnt' know that. Well, I know they could still do the PSN thing regardless of whether a PS3 has the chip or not due to the fact that each game can have a wrapper developed for it for pure software emulator, but at least it makes sense to include the chip for compatibility for all the games currently out there. stele29
From the second link in my last post (I made an edit while you replied), when Sony was questioned about doing software emulation:
"The 40GB model, to be launched in Europe on October 10, is a new model and is not equipped with any of the semiconductors from the PS2, and backwards compatibility would therefore have to be achieved by software emulation alone.
"The sheer numbers of PS2 titles available, together with the increased complexity of using a software only solution for each and every title means that to ensure accurate software emulation for the majority would be technically challenging, time consuming and costly. As we have mentioned on several occasions, our engineering resources are now focused on developing new and innovative features and services for the PS3 and, as a result the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles."
In other words, it's too costly to create an emulator for running PS2 games, and then ensuring that a majority of games will work on it without problems and technical issues.

Sony CEO announced that PSN would be looking into offering PS2 games on PSN the same way Xbox-Live offers ****cs. The emulators would be created on a game by game basis and since they would be sold, the costs would be absorbed by PSN. Its not a matter of if this will happen but when. The clincher is that each game would be developed individually for emulation. The PS3 is more than powerful enough to do this, without any special hardware. The chips were necessary for blanket emulation.

Fair enough, I could possibly see that happening. I completely over looked that aspect of your posts.
And my apologies if I seemed like I was trying to attack you in my posts. It's nothing against you; it's just that every day for probably the past week at least, the question of could the 40GB could get BC down the road came up. And every time, there were numerous people who think creating a full software emulator is a simple and easy to do thing, which btw really isn't. So I've kind of been on defense/error correction mode lately. Sorry again if I came out that way.

It does and it looks and plays great. I just got all 32 badges in this game and have almost unlocked everything on the other Socom games on my PS3. Now I have a 60 gig system but the 80 gig is the same when it comes to first party PS games (Zipper is one of Sony's first party developers).
