Pretty happy with all the big Sony announcements today, and most were in line with the rumors we've been hearing for the past few months. I am mildly disappointed they didn't announce software-emulation backwards compatibility (or hardware BC in the Slim, but that's just wishing for too much) for Firmware 3.0.

Does anyone care about this anymore? I understand most PS3 owners also have PS2's, but I never had one, so I'm definitely hoping for a feature that would add $99 of functionality to the console.

Well they wouldn't have filed the patent if they weren't going to do it at some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I have a ps2 but it would be nice to finally give the old girl a rest, been going since launch. Plus I'm out of memory card space and don't want to buy another!

I don't see this happening with the Fat PS3s, but with the new slim who knows what Sony has in store for it.

Nonsense. Do you really expect Sony to kick all current PS3 owners in the nuts by adding software emulation to the slim PS3 but not to the fat one? They are running with the same operating system anyway.

PS2 is still selling too well. We won't get software emulation until they can't sell them anymore.

I hope so, because I only have 5 PS3 games and I really never replay them.

Always want to replay my old games.

Well, I have b/c so it's not really an issue for me :-)... But I imagine that we will see it come back eventually. But even if not, PS2's are only $75 at gamestop's now. For the price of a game you can get a freakin PS2. So I don't think it's that big a deal anymore personally.

From IGN's interview with SCEA's John Koller:

Is backwards compatibility coming back?
"No plans right now," Koller said. "To be honest, there's such a substantial lineup of PlayStation 3 game discs now that we feel the consumer is more apt to be playing the PlayStation 3 games when they purchase the PlayStation 3."

We can't really put much stock into what Sony says though.

PS2 started in March 00' and will be supported for 10 years, so wait atleast 7 more months.

At the next E3, or maybe even sooner, there will be an announcement of BC coming back and for all models not just the slim.
