backwards compatibility question phase 2

Im thinking of buying a ps3 since my 360 got the famous RROD about 5 days ago.. that an issues with drm. Im tired of microsofts bs.

Anyhow i was just curious as to wether or not the PS3 is backwards compatible with playstation 2 and playstation 1 games?

I used to hear a LOT of mixed answers but have never tried the process myself. Can anyone clarify?

only the 60 20 and the old 80 gig can play ps1, ps2 and ps3 games the rest can only play ps1 or ps3 games

I hope it's possible to give b/c with a firmware update. The thing is, I have a new 80gb, but I never had a PS2 last gen (I had an Xbox). Now that I'm more of a Sony fan, I really want to play games like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus. Either they make those available for download, or they lose my money.
