Some1 told me once that Sony was making an update for the 40 GB PS3's (and any other PS3's that are not BC) which will make these also Backwards Compatible. Ofcourse I hope that they are cuz I have the 40GB version and I sold my PS2 to get the money for a PS3 :P. And there are still some PS2 titles that I wanna check out but never had the chance to do so.

So does any1 know if this is true? Or is it complete bullcrap?

Cheers.

We will find out in several hours- it's supposedly one of the "big announcements" expected at Sony's GamesCom 2009 address (which starts at 1 PM eastern time today).

theres a thread somewhere on this board that has a quote from an interview from John Koller (from sony) that BC will NEVER COME BACK TO PS3. that freaking sucks.

heres some links...........:(

i still don't believe it though, they've gone back on their word before... (rumble not coming back, saying slim leaks were fake)... so there's still a chance.

I don't think you'll see any news about PS2 backwards compatibility until Sony is ready to start selling PS2 games on the PlayStation Store (if that ever happens). And the size of most PS2 games makes the downloads less attractive. There is next to no chance of them adding backwards compatibility until that happens.

I don't think thats gonna work because the PS3 uses hardware-based PS2 emulation

Yep pretty much confirmed by Sony themselves that they wont be ever going back to PS2 BC because they don't see the importance in it. Thats Sony for you.

Sony has been talking of a 10 year life for the PS3. It seems short sighted to think that they will never ever try to sell the PS2 back catalogue as downloads during that time. Eventually PS2 sales will drop off and it will become harder to buy games for it, just as PS1 sales dropped off. At that point, Sony will have a large back catalogue that isn't making them any money. Finding a way of selling that to PS3 owners may make financial sense at that point. So I think it is more a question of when rather than if. It is clear that the original PS3 models contained more PS2 hardware than they needed for the task, since they only included the PS2 GPU in the initial European models while maintaining compatibility. It isn't clear to me that the PS3 lacks the power to do full emulation: it just hasn't been done yet.

We'll see about that now won't we?

Backwards Compatibility is not cost effective for them, and it drives the prices up. By them dropping prices recently, there isn't a cup of water in hell's chance of that happening, nor a Snowman's chance. If you want backwards compatibility, buy a PS2.... they are cheap and it'll play ALL the PS2 games, not just some, which was always an issue with it anyways.

My $0.02 about lack of backwards compatibilty. I have many games on the PS2, and would love to get them on PS3, and was going to go buy one, but upon research, the new PS3s don't support them. That's too bad, but what that does is show that Sony has no loyalty to past customers, so why should I be loyal to them? How do I know that the PS4 or whatever's next, won't be compability with the PS3 games? They've done it once, they might do it again. I'd much rather go over to Wii, which I'm not thrilled over, but at least it is compatible with older games. Just seems like a waste of money to continue with a company who's only interest is trying to force the consumer into buying their new cr*p. Just doesn't make sense.
