I'm thinking about buying a video game system on black friday and the PS3 seems like my best bet. I recently graduated college and finally have some money to spend now to join the next (current) generation of consoles. I've owned a PS1 as well as a PS2 in the past, and have a pretty decent sized library of these games built up. The problem is that I have an 12 year old brother who still uses the PS2 (at my parents house) so I can't take the system to my apartment with me. In a nutshell, I want to be able to still play my library of PS1 and PS2 games without needing to buy a separate system. I haven't really followed any of the console news since around the time the current generation systems launched in 2006. Back then, the PS3 offered backwards compatability with PS1 and PS2 games. Is this still the case now? From reading some of the posts on here, it seems that they may have discontinued this feature. This point is pretty important to me, and is the crucial sell point to my girlfriend who would be perfectly happy playing some old Spyro games. I would be willing to pay more for this feature, if I can get it off of the shelfs. If anyone has any more info, please pass it along. Thanks.

the only full BC version is the old 60b and the older 80gb has 60% BC. All new models have no BC.:(

Every Playstation3 will play PS1 games. But only a launch 60 GB or 20GB (or an older 80 GB Model) will play PS2 games.

Can anyone confirm this? How would saving work? Will you be able to save your PS1 game files to the HDD or will you need a separate memory card?

There is an option to create a virtual memory card for your games on the PS3 options which is where the games would be saved. You can also buy an adapter to use the original memory cards with.

If you want a full BC ps3, you're going to have to bend over for the eBay price gouging that will inevitably happen to your wallet. The launch 20GB and 60GB units have near-100% BC for both PS1 and PS2 titles, with the latter having the full set of features Sony has bragged about for the platform. If your list of games will work on a software-BC unit, then you could try looking for one of the older Motorstorm or the more recent MGS4 80GB bundles. These limited-edition SKU's of ps3's have software BC... not 100% BC for PS2, but still very good PS1 BC. The currently available models in retail have no BC for PS2 games and the poorest PS1 BC yet - even poorer than the softBC that the slim PStwo's have for PS1 games. And that's saying quite a lot. Put it this way... it's cost me about $2000 altogether (having had at least a couple of units fry up on me) to finally have a 60gig PS3 that works like it should. :( But at least each time I only paid close to the MSRP instead of what those shysters on eBay want for one.

Its best just to keep the system the games were intended for.  The only instances when backward compatibility worked out really nicely was when the Playstation 2 could play all of the Playstation games, and how the Wii can play all of the Gamecube games.

If I am missing another instance when it all worked out well feel free to correct me but that is all that I can think of.

I take it that you dont' have a full-bc PS3? I can attest that (especially now with 2.* firmware) this PS3's BC output of PS1 and PS2 games look far better than what they did on the actual PS2 - even when using the same display and same set of Component Video Cables. I'm not just talking out of some review or tech page about it - this is from first-hand experience and having both consoles close enough to actually do it.

It comes with software BC. Not even close to 100%, and in my case (going through my library and searching on Sony's website regarding compatibility), it was more like 60% of my games were BC on the softBC PS3's... so that was clearly unacceptable to me.

You can't count the whole system as having backwards compatibility of only certain models have it, so no, PS3 does not count.

No, it really, really doesn't count.  Thats like making 5,000 game system, allowing one of them to have backwards compatibility, and saying that the systems you make are backwards compatible.

They arn't.

Feature-wise, the Motorstorm and MGS4 bundles for PS3's were both the same - same number of USB ports, Wi-Fi, storage space, and software-level BC.

the BC of the 80Gb (MGS4 bundle) is way over 80%, it's the same as the European and I have no game that doesn't work (about 20 games as I usally sell a game when I finish it) so if someone has 60% of his games working it's just no luch

ou can check here : http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus to see if a game is compatible (think there was a site with a list but can't find it) ; all PS1 titles are said to be compatible on any PS3 model

You might try to get the cheapest PS3 you can(which for by black friday im sure the 40gb will probably be closer to 300) and then get either a new or used PS2 if you really want to play your old games. There have been only a few times that ive gone back to play my old PS2 games since ive even owned my 60gb but it is still nice to have the option. My own PS2 that i had since launch wouldnt even read a new PS2 game right before i got my PS3.

you probably won't care about anything ps2 has/had to offer when you get hold of all the great games available for ps3 right now. and btw the playstation network store has a download of the first spyro for 5.99 and the first 3 crash bandicoots, all 5.99 a pop as well if that garners your interests.

*grumbles from stupid HTML errors that won't let me quote* Hurray for you. :| I'm just saying that in my case, the softBC would only let me play about 60% of the games I actually have for PS1 and PS2. Far too many of the games in my library are simply unplayable (either flat out not compatible, or STILL having many game-breaking glitches when played on these units). And I wouldn't say "all" PS1 games, because the PS3's BC for PS1 is the same as the soft-BC that the slim PStwo's use, and there are several errata pages which list PS1 (and some PS2) games that simply won't work on those slim PStwo's. Nope; the only model of PlayStation2 that did have 100% BC for PS1 games were the old "fatty" PS2's, since they actually had hardware support for the BC functionality. the slim redesign removes this hardware and uses a software emulator, which - while good - is not 100% either. It's just fortunate that at least the majority of said games do work well enough on the PStwo to suffice.

Ehhh, all PS3 systems have the same PS1 BC.
