Should the PS4 have BC compatibility?

I'm just curious to see what people think, i know its years ahead.

But from my point of view there should be a cut off line somewhere for any console manufacturers.

I mean how long are they supposed to continue to have BC of more than 10 year old consoles?

For the customers its nice offcourse, but for a company it just means they'll have to spend more on incorporating BC thus making the console cost alot higher.

In my opinion the PS4 should have BC but only to/with the PS3 the PS1/2 should be cut off or no BC at all.

People keep expecting Sony to have BC because it was the first company to do so.

But in all fairness don't you think the PSX (and maybe by then also the PS2) will have had it's time and should be left alone.

It's really nice to have a 3-in-1 system, but with that comes higher costs with higher costs comes lower sales in hardware.

This is not a flame thread, so please don't flame me about it.

I'm merely curious about PlayStaiton owners opinion.

P.S. I own a PSX, PS2 and a PS3, all bought the moment they got launched.

I tried to put up a poll, but i couldn't find it.

For the PS2 it came out coincidently when i was going to Japan so i bought it the same month it came out there ^^

The playstation 3 is supposed to last for 10 years...so you might have to wait awhile. Maybe 6 years.

oh come on, there's no reason you guys can't give him an answer.

I think a console should ONLY have the previous generation at not any before that because its good for the transistion period where you're going between the two. But I have no interest in playing games so old as the PS1 and I'm also not a big fan of replaying games (the fun seems to be gone out of most of them after 1 play). I know plenty of people would disagree with me on that, but that's my answer to your question. :)

After PS3 dies out, probly, and only porbly, the techonology will be advance enough to use one chip for all the generations.

if you're concerned about a high cost then adding the ps3 abilities would be by far the most expensive. Maybe they could start planning an emulator for only the best games to come out on the ps3, maybe just 25% backward compatible. Of course people will complain if it's only 25% but why do you need to replay all your old games even if they are crap? Oh no, I own Genji Days of the Blade and I can't play it on the PS4?!

The thing with BC, is that the cost will stay the same. As Sony won't invest in lowering the cost of producing PS1/2/3 chips (especially the former 2), the manufacturing costs will be the same in 10 years as they are now. PS4 will have the same problem as the PS3 has now. I say knock BC on the head entirely. I've not payed a single PS1/2 game on my PS3 in 6 months of ownership. Hell, the only PS2 games I play are Driv3r (I know...) and GH2. Which I still play alot. I play them on my PS2. I played Vigilante 8 on my PS2 the other week, but only because the PS1 won't read it anymore. And I can't be arsed to set it up.

I say get rid of BC, lower the cost, and be done with it.

It would be good to have PS3 BC in next generation.

I don't believe PS1/PS2 should at all.

I agree with everyone else it's way to early to talk PS4, although I will say I agree backwards cap is not needed at all! I still own my original PSX, PS2 and PS3.

I know it's hell alot too early to talk about this, but hey it's talking that can't hurt.

Beside it's something different from the regular routine, even if it's way due for it's time.

It's funny to see how many people whine/complained when they removed the BC on the 40GB model, but yet in reality i think the percentage of those people that actually use/used the BC on the ps3 is alot less compared to the complaints.

Sure it helps your wallet to have a 3-in-1 system, but does one actually make use of it.

Probably not as much, personallyi still play some PS2 games(SF3, KOF XI), but wether it can be played on my PS3 or not doesn't bother me at all.

It doesn't cost much effort to switch cables and boot the games and have alot of fun.

Anyways i hope they have a nice small box that's called the PS4, PS3 is a bit too big imo, it is a wonderful machine you'll be crazy not to admit that.

BC with PS3 would be nice, but below that they should scrap imo.

They lose and make money by having BC, lose because the customer won't buy a PS1/2 seperately, they make money because a customer can still play his old games on the new machines giving it more bang for the buck scenario.

But i think they would make more if a customer would buy them seperately.

In my opinion I think that psone should die out by next gen, although I absolutely love some psone games like the first Metal Gear Solid, FFVII and FFVIII, Chrono Cross and more, but they just look horrible in retrospect to what will be out at the time, I cant even imagine the graphics that'll come with the ps4, but I know that at the moment even some ps2 games can make the psone look like a 16 bit game. Although I think the ps2 will still have a reply factor, especially games like God of War (1 and 2) since they're actually the only last gen game competing against next gen games in video game awards like Xplay and such. I think they should do something like 50% ps2 BWC, and 90% ps3 BWC (excluding a few major flops in creation during the ps3's lifespan. But yeaaah, we still have another 9 years to go before we see the ps4 so my opinion could change drastically by then.

BC is backward Capability which means it can play ps1 and ps2 games. In my opinion, I think they should knock off the BC on the PS4 so the console don't have to be expensive since everybody own the system such as the PS3 you've already got the Backward Capability for your ps1 and ps2 games (as long you don't own the 40gb PS3). We want to have a fresh new console which everybody can afford and a better start so there wont be a console delay. By the time 10 years have pass, i think people wouldnt mind about having a BC and who knows, it might turn out to be good. This is just my opinion so don't go super sayian on me, lol.

well by then the systems will be so powerfull that you could probably just download the games like we can now with 8 bit - 64 bit games. If you want to be technical, the ps4 wont be bc but the online system should be powerful enough to let you downloadfrom the"PS4" networkor whatever it's going to be called.

With the way things are going, I think Next gen is going to be the last gen for me.. Terrible experiences with sony crap support, and the lack of games so far.

But in principle i think the PS4 should only be BC for PS3 games as PS4 will be out when PS3 games are still coming out, and some people sell their consoles to buy the newer ones.
THe only reason they had BC for both the PS2 and PS1 is because bothworked easily on the emotion engine chip, and sony want to make money by selling old PS1 cl.assics on Playstation Store.

But by the time PS4 comes out, it'll be much simpler to just get BC with ps3 games, unless the emotion engine by then will fit on something so tiny that it won't make sense to leave it out - any specs are good specs when you are promoting a console, so saying "BC with ps3,2,1" will look good in the end.

BC is only good for a transition to a new system when few new games are out there. PS2 to PS3 or PS3 to whateva.I say no BC beyong the previous system. If you own a PS3 you gotta stop playing PS1 games. Move on.. join the future. Why would you want better gaming systems to keep playing old games?

hmmm... why on earth should i stop playing PS1 games because i own a PS3? that's the most senseless sentence i've ever seen.

sooo.. since there's blu-ray and hd-dvd now, you're NEVER going to watch a single dvd ever again? think about what you're about to say/write.

BC is truly a great thing. my girlfriend already thinks the ps3 and xbox360 is crowding the area around the TV, wonder what she would say if i pulled out the good ol' ps1 and ps2 again too... BC is truly a great thing. i don'æt mind paying the few extrta bucks for BC. its not like the entire price of the ps3 stands on BC alone.

By the time the ps4 comes out, it will easily be powerful enough to run ps2 games with no additional hardware. Kinda like how the ps3 40 gig has 100% ps1 BC because the cell can easily emulate the abilities of the ps1's computational and graphical processing. So ps1/ps2 BC will not really cost anything on the ps4. PS3 bc will be the part that will take some tweaking, but will be importatnt for the transitional period. So, yes, I think that a future sony console should include FULL Playstation brand BC. There are ps1 games that are still great to play to this day. My ps1 and ps2 may still work now, but eventually they will die. I would still like to be able to play my games when that happens.

well next gen it will be cheaper because they don't need a new format because if they can make a 200g blu-ray disk wich will be plenty of space next gen. all i have to say is if sony does not use blu-ray next gen i will hit them with a stick. it will be cheap for them and us.

Ok, here's the deal. The Playstation brand has good BC. But it's not something that should be supported for too long. What I mean is. When the PS3 and PS4 comes out. Yes, support PS2/3 games. But do not do it for too long since the game library will grow for the PS3/4 and you will spend less and less time playing the old games. BC is only imporant for the first 6-12 months. After the NEW games come out you will find yourself playing less and less OLD games. And why should Sony or whoever keep spending money on supporting it if there are other things that can be done. The only good thing is that maybe the 40GB can be upgraded later (and the 60GB minus the EE) will have software BC like the 80GB.

Did Sony stop making the PS3 because it is not even a year old yet?

This proves the PS3 is not making many gamers happy, I bought the ps3 to play ps3 games not to play ps2 or ps1 games.
