Now that I've just seen an interview about the RPG Rise of the Argonauts, one of the game creators said, that they made the game so you "Start out good, and proceeds to great, instead of starting out like an unexperienced soldier and proceeds to be good."
Personally I LOVE starting out like this loser, a poor rookie who doesn't have any experience, skills, weapons, etc etc.
For instance, Half-life 1 & 2 did that great, letting your start with NO suit nor any weapons. I liked Fable a lot, cause you start out like a kid, where you grow and learn skills, etc.
I hate when games start out in the middle of a fight, giving you a big rifle you'll be using the whole game, (Resistance, for instance. I liked the game, but I didn't like the fact that you were giving a weapons you would be using the entire game because its that awesome. You could have started out with a pistol, or something like that. That's why I'm really looking foward to R2 ;))
Well, in offline mode, starting from the bottom and working your way up is the natural and most preferable, route to take, according to me. However, online mode can change things. Say you're playing BF:BC for instance, having a lot of unlocks helps you get a better score, thus starting with everything gives you the upper hand.
Of course this theory differs in one state, and that is if everyone who ever will play the game starts at the same time, making it equally fair for all. Then it's fine to start from the bottom.
