#1 benefit is educational purposes.
Linux is a staple of learning computers in college.

Secondarily, there is quite a bit of software out there if you know what to do...

The proper answer is you should wait until developers (like myself) get through with streamlining some linux software packages so that non-techy people have an easier time using it.

I browse the web, instant message my friends, check e-mail, and if I really want to, I can type up documents, make spreadsheets, and presentations on my PS3...Can my Xbox 360 do that? Uhh....no. By the way, I can also play Super Nintendo games on it. Yeah you heard me right. What are you waiting for? It costs you 10 out of 60 GB. You have nothing to lose in my opinion.

Umm that's why I have a computer...you know to do computer stuff on. The reason I have a 360 and PS3 is to you know.....play games on. My computer is 10x better than the PS3 for computing needs.

The benefits of using Linux on your PS3 is basically an environment for you to use an OS which is a helluva lot better than Windows, it's not easy, and I wouldn't recommend learning on the PS3, you'll probably just get frustrated because of the lack of support.  If you really want to learn Linux, Ubuntu is a very good starter distro (really easy to install, just pop that CD in your PC), also I'd recomend taking a class on Unix at a university if you have that option available.

I thought about it, but my computer is connected to the same tv as my ps3, so there's really no point.

Whoa. Take a second to tap that "Caps lock" button, will ya? Typing in all caps is a no no. GS says so. Just a heads up............... On Topic: I see no real benefit of having Linux on your PS3 if you already have a computer. Even the crappier computers do a better job than PS3 as a.... um.... computer. At any rate, Linux a great OS that's fun to learn with tons of different distros and tons of support. Sure all the support comes from independent devs and tech-savvy computer nerds, but this gives you tons of great options and alternatives for great software. And most of it you can download for absolutely free all day long. Also, if you really get into it and decide you want to write your own programs... go right ahead! I think everyone should check out Linux (I recommend Ubuntu for starters), and everyone should have a copy of Knoppix on hand for when Vista fails them once again. Knoppix = lifesaver. ..................... Anyway, Linux is amazing, but I wouldn't bother putting it on my PS3.

Basic computer stuff. Although there's really no point - the GPU is locked off and the PS3 itself doesn't have a whole lot of memory, so you aren't going to be doing anything on the PS3 you wouldn't be able to do on a computer built in the past ten years. It's more of a novelty, so you can say "I have Linux on my PS3," and that's about it.
