This is not a rumor. It's a fact.

My friend in media showed me that the 80 GB PS3 is being discontinued. It was in one of the newsletters for the store on toolkit.

I don't understand why. It seems the U.S. is heading in the direction the UK is in right now, where there is only the 40GB console to choose from. :(

PROOF: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/01/24/best-buy-discontinuing-80gb-ps3/

Told ya I would get proof. :P

No, that's the 40 GB version. I'm pretty sure Sony is keeping the 80 GB model no matter what...however, i can be convinced by some evidence? I have a 40 GB btw, and i love it! :D

I think that this may be true. I have a lot of best buy gift cards and was planning to buy my 2nd ps3 and was planning to buy the 80 gb ps3 but they have been sold out all throughout ohio. I tried calling the best buy store in cinn and they said that they were waiting on Sony or something like that. I hope its not true cause the 80 gb sells like crazy.

Perhaps they will than lower the price of the 40GB to 300 or 350 bucks. Than release a non Special Edition 80GB for 400 or 450. Or do nothing :P

I don't think that the 80gb will go the way of the 60gb bc the 80gb sells better than the 40gb and applies to a higher market. Now Sony may discontinue the 80gb with motorstorm packed-in and exchange it for an 80gb with ds3. Based on the recent revelation that they cut production cost to $400 means that they are actually making profit off the 80gb

Sony is phasing out support for BC (And I'm OK with that). 40GB sells like hotcakes. Focus on the one you can move with the most success. Good business strat really.

There is no other info or news anywhere of this. Best Buy might not be selling them anymore, but if this was going to happening it would be everywhere.

Maybe the bundle with Motorstorm is being discontinued, not the actual system.

Seems odd, but think about it. After Kaz making that statement where they won't support the ps2 anymore image wise, I could see why they'd discontinue the 80gig. Forces consumers without a ps2 and ps3, to buy them both to play their games. Even if its only 20-30$ more, this just feels money hungry. I doubt they'll update the ps2 compatibility anymore either for the 80gig either.

Smart, but bad for the consumer. Thats for certain. Ps2 games look quite a bit better on the ps3 on a hdtv.

Bad move on their part, if they decide to completely remove ps2 compatibility. It takes away one of the perks of having a ps3. It's not like they have a huge selection of games to offset the lack of backward compatibility right now...or even after MGS4, Killzone 2 and FFXIII

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggghhhhhhhhttttttttttttttttttttt,

so, official Best Buy Worldwide employee notices are worded like that?

Without letterhead?

Without signatures identifying origin?

Makes sense, Best Buy isn't a business or anything...oh...wait...

There's a thread in general linking to Sony's decision to discontinue the 80GB entirely. It's not just Best Buy.

ummm whoopdee? yea, I have an 80gig, but it doesnt mean there won't be 80 gigs still in stock for quite some time, before christmas I saw 60gigs in many stores in abundance, and I still see the 60's here and there...So the 80's will be around for quite some time...now if Sony releases another version what would that be? 30gb? 25gb? 15gb? 10gb?!

Where's that link?

I just did a google search, and turned up nothing but that fake "best buy" employee notice.

Someone post proof from like the official Sony website, or a statement from an official Sony rep, or something more reliable than a stupid fansite or some rumor from an alleged Best Buy rep and I might just believe it to be true. The 80gb is like the most popular PS3 model, so I don't see Sony discontinuing it.

Has anyone thought that it could be the sku that is being discountinued? Perhaps the 80gig WITH Motorstorm will be stopped, but a new 80gig sku will replace it.

Okay finally found a pic. This is exactly how it looks like in Best Buy's Tooklit.

They don't use Retail Insiders anymore since they updated the system a few months back. It's a shame because if you're not a Best Buy employee that pic really does not look legit.

However you heard it from me, probably from someone else first.

I don't think this is anything to be concerned about. Sony is smart. They know what they're doing. They know people demand Backwards Compatibility. I assume they are removing all available 80GBs off the market to release a new bundle. Most likely with the Dual Shock 3 controller and possibly a better game or no game.

Thats just 1 chain of stores. I don't really care anyways. I am pretty sure if I decide to get the 80GB instead of the 40GB, I will be able to find one in two months.

P.S. I know the difference in the two models, but what comes packaged with the 80GB that's not with the 40GB? Is there a game or movie included with the 80GB model? What about the HDMI cable? Does that come with either model?

Yeah, I heard. That's so dumb. The 40 GB console can't be described as anything more than gimped. Good thing I've got my trusty 60 GB model.

Well, I just checked the bestbuy website and the only ps3 model they have is the 40gig. Good thing I got my ps3 80gig(Circuit City) two weeks ago and it was the last one on top of a pile of 40gb ps3's:D.

They are not going to discontinue the 80GB all together , It's just the 80GB with motorstorm bundle, even if they did just buy a PS3 at another store.

Well, I saw on Bestbuy.ca the Canadian site, still has the 80GB still listed, so this leads me to believe that some of you are posting misinformation or only the US Best Buy stores are discontinuing it. Now, I'd post a link but this f*cking site won't let me post it, cause it's too big, but go to the site and see for yourselves

actually, that is stupid, the only reason why they are doing this coz they think they will lose money and the system will rot in the systems section, NO, with these games coming out for the ps3, hahhah!, i guess they are making a big mistake
