I have a Sanyo FH1 camcorder that I shoot (and edit) at 60fps 1080p mpeg4 (h.264), and I'd love to be able to use my PS3 to stream or play back the movie files. However, while it can open them, it struggles to play them back at a playable speed and is extremely choppy. It's slower than my old 2Ghz laptop.

I realize that such high resolution mpeg4 files are a CPU hog, but I also know that the Cell was built for that sort of thing and it's probably just an issue of poor codecs on Sony's side.

Having said that, does anyone know of a different format I could convert the files to that would allow the PS3 to play them smoothly? I'd rather not convert to AVC or something uncompressed as I like having file sizes smaller, but if that's the only solution, so be it.

have you tried sreaming them from your pc to your ps3?

these are the files the ps3 can play:

If you can't find the answer using google, take the formats mentioned in the link and do some trial and error. Have fun

Can you record the video at 24fps or 30fps instead? Blu-ray movies are encoded at 24fps, not 60fps.

Compression of the data could also affect playback, the larger the data stream the harder it would be too play back.

Yeah, I've tried USB drives, external hard drives, streaming from my PC and NAS, and using the SD card from my camcorder directly - all kind of jerky when it comes to playing back the video, but not for lack of bandwidth. My guess is that it's probably just too much for the PS3 to handle, although it does do a better job than the 360 does. I'll try halving the framerate, which should also half the CPU power needed at the expense of extra smooth video.

Its not too much, the ps3 wasnt really designed to handle the 60fps that the video is encoded in. Try changing it to 30.
