So I'm not a huge fan of first-person shooters, but since they seem to be so dominant this generation, I figure I should try one. I'm not completely unfamiliar with the genre — I played Duke Nukem, Quake and Wolfenstein back in the day and I also really liked GoldenEye 64 Metroid Prime for the GameCube. (I realize these games are all extrememly old. I'm more of an RPG/MMORPG player at heart.) I also like the idea of playing online.

Which PS3 game should I play? I keep reading people praising Killzone 2's online mode, what makes it so great?

For a newbie, I would probably suggest Call of Duty 4 to start off with, as the controls and gameplay are quite a bit more....simplified. I think it would be easier to get into then Killzone 2.

Try Resistance 2, the 8 player co-op has a mmo feel to it, as there are 3 classes, soldier (tank) spec ops (dps) and medic (healer). And wat i like about Killzone 2 online is how it has the changing objectives in match; Before killzone 2 i would only play team deathmatch, and totally missed out on how much fun the other gameplay types are. Bioshock and Farcry 2 are also good fps if your lookin for a single player experience.

Also be sure to check out Borderlands when i release, its being called a RPS (Roleplaying Shooter) be its developers.

If you enjoy RPG's then borderlands is coming out oct. 20. It has been called a RPS(Role Playing Shooter) There are for classes, skill trees, loot including a huge amount of guns, all randomly generated.

fallout 3 wont give him an FPS experience. its too open world and if you play it like and FPS you will get owned since ammo is hard to find.

I would first ask this question: Which style FPS are you most interested in?

Do you like modern day weapons and things? CoD4 is for you.

Do you like WW2? Then WaW or that new one are more to your liking.

Basically go read some reviews of games and choose your style and then start playing. If you're new, and you want to play online... You're going to get owned early on until you get a feel for the controls and learn the maps anyway. I'd know. I love FPS games and just kinda got into them within the last 1 1/2 years. And I play CoD4 exclusively. Been getting own for almost 2 years now. But I have gotten better. Online has a lot of great guides for games that you can read up on weapons and maps and strategies.

id probably go with the orange box too, people are saying cod4, but i think that the single player is a little difficult if you are a fps noob

Well to be honest, if you are looking for an easy game to start off with, play Resistance, they are simple yet still quite enjoyable.

But i'd still go with COD 4 because that will just impress you enough to keep playing FPS games, wheras playing a simple one might put you off playing any more FPS games. Also online play is great on COD whereas the Resistance series online is poor.

Well, I say rent Bioshock to get into it. On Killzone 2, you would need to play a lot in the single campaign and when youthink you're good enough there's the Multiplayer. Or CoD4 like many people say.

I would recommend Resistance 2 as it is good game to start with. It also have on-line feature and it is really enjoyable. However, you could not go wrong with COD4 but for me, Resistance 2 is a better game for newbies.

Try Mirror's Edge it gets you used to the FP perspective and then try Killzone 2. KZ2 was my first FPS and it was rather simple to get used to, especially considering I didn't have any COD4 control habits either.

Depends are you looking for Story or Multiplayer? If you want story go for Bioshock.

At a price of twenty its a good deal. Or you can go for Killzone 2, which is great MP and story.

Start off with Killzone 2, Bioshock, or Battlefield Bad Company, and hold off until COD MW 2 comes out.

CoD4. You actually don't even have to use your gun to get kills. Look up into the sky and press R2 to lob a grenade over a building and you're almost guaranteed a kill.

Thanks for the responses. I'm definitely interested in the multiplayer component, so it seems like COD4 might be a good choice. Do people still play it on PS3, or have players all migrated to Killzone 2?

A lot people still play COD4, they all haven't migrated to K2 (alot of COD4 players wont play K2 since they are so use to COD's controls). The online is sure to die down a bit after Modern Warfare 2 launches tho.

no, cod4 will make him not like any other shooter ever.... get battlefield bad company. the silly campaign makes it not serious, so you don't get frustrated.

Don't get BF:BC, it's imbalance and can get kinda lame. Good game still, but there's better.

Call of Duty World at War. This game is pretty much Noob City, just get to level 10, make an MP40 class, and you are set my friend.

I would start with Bioshock, because it is single player only and is my favorite FPS this gen. After you get Bioshock, the first online FPS I would recommend would be Battlefield Bad Company, any one who isn't good at FPS will get pwned in COD 4 the whole time they play online.

I started with COD 4 and have been hooked ever since. You are with a team most of the time and you don't have to make commands like in Brothers in Arms or Tom Clancy's games. Simple made easy controls, and a sniper tactics to die for.

i`d say CoD 4 as that game set a huge benchmark for the genre. is a little easier than killzone 2 control wise (this can make online hard for some) with a great single player campaign. has better multiplayer than resistanse2.

If he hasn't played FPS before, he's going to get owned at Killzone 2

I've played a little, but not a ton. The newest one I've played was Medal of Honor Heroes 2 for the Wii. Which was ok, I liked the controls, but the online mode kinda sucked. Being an MMO fan, I like the idea of being able to communicate with teammates.

Thanks very much for all these suggestions. They've been a huge help.

Are you kidding? That is THE worst game for a noob to pick up. He'd get creamed by the second level!

Call of Duty 4is relitavely easy, and short. Half Life 2 is simple, but fun.
