So I was playing Assassin's Creed again today, and it struck me, that although the enemies are easy to kill and it's usually pretty easy to die, the combat can be a tonne of fun. It's great when you attack, they counter, then you counter and kill them. Back and forth exchanges like that are money, but they happen far too infrequently. Through the years, many games have tried to emulate that excitement behind sword battles, but they just don't click. Jedi Outcast is too.. detatched. Oblivion is too slow. Zelda is just off (all of them). God of War is far too hack'n'slash. Assassin's Creed does a good job, but rarely, and it's over after only one exchange or two.

What's the best sword combat that you've encountered in any game? I'm looking for a good experience... Thanks

I agree, there were a lot of things in Assassin's Creed that many people didn't appreciate because of "repetition."

Although, once you get the hang of countering, the game is pretty much butter from there.

I think you've almost exhausted good games with sword play there... I loved Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy...I thought the lightsaber action was good. Oblivion was too slow and it was a hack, block affair, not entirely convincing and Assaian's Creed wasn't satisfying. Zelda is so unrealistic it doesn't rate a mention in terms of sword play. I cannot think for the life of me any GOOD games with sword play in them besides these.

Best sword play on a ps3 game is Broken Sword. Hands down. Theres not even an argument worth to be made otherwise. You cant just run in and start mashing buttons, you have to think your attacks through and look for ways to attack weaknesses in enemies defenses. Although, I suppose with any game that has good swordplay there are people who just run around and mash buttons without taking the time to learn what their doing. But its been like that since they released the first fighter in the arcade.

I know it's not on PS3, but on the topic of sword combat, I know the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is a solid contender.

Granted as long as you judge it only on its combat, since it also had its share of flaws.

I think we should have a PS3 remake of Bushido Blade.

It sounds fun.

The devil may cry series (aside from 2, of course) has impressive swordplay. although it does throw guns into the mix, they are completely optional. many amazing combos can be executing with the swords

yes the sword action is fun-for awhile I'll say because the game is so repetitive and gets boring because of the same ole stuff over and over. So overall the game sucks

Assassins Creed swordplay was all countering. Fun, but not much to it. I like DMC4's swordplay. And Ninja Gaiden probably has some good swordplay as well

I've never actually played a game that uses swordplay in a fun / realistic way. DMC's is decent, but way too OTT. Assassin's Creed's is also good, but way too easy. How about a game that actually portrays realistic sword fighting without it being a bore fest?

Get Way of the Samurai, it has a pretty decent system where you have to rely on good blocking/countering while watching, that your blade won't break. I remember Sword of the Samurai having a good system as well, but this was more of a beat em up AFAIR (haven't played it for a long time)

This, and bushido blade. Mashing the x button and occasionally the square button to create combo's is not good sword play. Regardless of how fun it might be.

Jip, If you play Way of the samurai 2 on anything higher than medium one non blocked strike will have a large chance of destroying you, and you have a pretty high chance of your blows being countered. (insta-death)

This was one of the main aspects for me to enjoy the game. It just seems to be so realistic on higher difficulties and it's a great feeling once you won a fight. The freedom over you actions that leads to one of a lot endings is actually pretty cool too :D Can't wait to finally play the third one xD

Too true, the only flaw the game had was that it was so short. But on the other hand I did complete the game a dozen times so it did soak up an amazing ammount of time. I really hope they do right by the third instalment.

Yeah the accoiries were nice but I always felt the customization options could've been more broad. And dang I hope they release it, if the game was in english I would've just imported it but I'm guessing the chances for that are quite small. I'll do some research into this game as soon as I get home from work.

I think LOTR Two Towers and Return of the King have great swordplay. You could do fast and fierce attacks. You could counter or you could counter with instand kill. Arrows you can block with your sword.
