Are there other ways to back up the data on my PS3? I'm about to ship it off to repair and I need 12 gigs so a thumbdrive wouldn't work. I have an external HD but the PS3 can't detect it, its formatted NTSF if that matters. Can I back the data up directly to my laptop somehow?

The drive must be formatted to FAT32.

I would buy a 320gig 2.5" Sata drive and install that.

Plus buy a case to the drive so you can use it as a potable storingmedia.

I already have alot of data on my 500gb external HD. I don't want to format and lose everything. Do you know to partition part of my external HD to Fat32?

From wha I know you have t have a HDD formatted to FAT32, so since u already have a 500gb HDD either format that, or buy a new external HDD.

I have no where to store my data if I format my external HDD. Can I create a partition without formatting the entire HDD?

You can't have a drive formatted to NTFS and FAT32 - they're completely different. You can't put a file larger than 4GB on a FAT32 drive.

have you ever heard of partitioning? it basically spilts the hard drive into 2 or more parts allowing the computer to view them as multiple hard drives. it also allows for the use of different formats of hard drives. half can be ntfs and the other half can be fat 32

I have a question - i need to copy my MGS4 save data on to something just in case my friend erases it when he borrows my PS3. What's the simplest way? Do not want to install a new hdd into the PS3. Can you just plug in a memory stick into one of the USB ports and then easily transfer the files?

You can partition your portable drive with another partition of fat32 on windows vista. Go to start, control panel, then scroll to the bottom and under administrative tools select create and format hard disk partitions. then when you enter the disk management screen find your portable drive under the drive listings. right click the drive, the select shrink partition, then you'll be prompted to select how much you want to shrink the parition. Shrink it to whatever you want, 30000 would be 30 GB ect. Once you do that click shrink. Than you will see another partition pop up of unallocated space. Then right click that space, and select new simple volume. Follow the screens until you see format partion, and it will give you the option to select what file system you want, there is FAT32 and ntfs. so pick fat 32 and quick format. thats it you should be ready to go

No reason to waste money if you already have a large backup drive and lots of unused space on it :P
