I don't wanna take my PS3 apart, and I use it dailey. After about 5 minuets the fan kicks in hard and it is quite distracting. I would like to clean it out because It was first owned by a heavy smoker. I smoke too and its hell on electronics. I try not to smoke when the PS3 is on. I treat it like a new born :P
Use a low power vacuum and clean all the vents. You could also do the fan test which blows all the dust out from the back look on Youtube to see how its done :)
Don't do a fan test. Simply dust the outside with a non-abrasive cloth and use a low power vaccuum and hold it a couple inches from the vents to properly clean it. Be sure it's kept in a well ventilated area. Sometimes if it's under a cabinet the hot air just circulates and forces the PS3 to operate at a higher power. All the best.
With the smoke that leaves a film on everything the ONLY way to clean the system is disassemble and do a through cleaning with a good electronics cleaner. It's gonna take more than just a external cleaning now. Also replace the thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5 while it's apart. I also smoke but I always go outside when I do and before handling any electronics I wash my hands to remove the tar.
