Not entirely true. While it's technically legal to rip DVDs for your own personal use, it is illegal to circumvent the DRM on them.
DVD Decrypter is usually the best program for ripping DVDs. It's safe to use. However, the developer got threatened and the project got shut down. Older versions are still available and work well. Some movies though can't be ripped, such as Casino Royal. I won't tell you where to find them but Google is your friend.
You can then use PSP Video 9 to encode them to MPEG-4 AVC. PSP Video 9 is probably the best. I can't remember if it can read .VOB files so you may need a program to encode VOB to MPEG-2 first.

The creator of the videos uses DVD Shrink and PSP Video 9. You will have to play around a bit with Video 9 because the instructions shown are for a previous version. It took a while, but I was eventually able to match most of the settings from the You Tube tutorials.
