I put my console ontop of two empty PSP game cases to keep that 1" air gap under it, and then the unit is vented to the open air as much as physically possible and out of the cabinets etc that people like to stick them in to make them disappear. You could get a USB-powered laptop fan to set it on, that works great for drawing air from the underside... don't bother playing around with fance PS3 "Intercoolers" - feh. Sweet Marketing Name, Ad Exec-Guy!!!
If you really feel the need, get a $5 mini fan from WalMart... but please, don't believe the hype. PS3s can get warm, they've left one running for a week in testing, trust me. Trolls would have you believe there's some sort of dire need to accentuate your PS3 with all sorts of extra BS, but if it was made properly on the assembly line and you keep it properly ventilated to regular room air and it's not compounded by other electronics surrounding it generating heat, then you should be fine with the unit as-is.

IfI were you I would keep a fan on it too. Not a cooling fan but like a box fan or something. And a cooling fan too.

I have mine on a glass shelf and in an open area no heat problems. It seems that the glass shelf helps spread the heat .BaffelyI have mine on a metal trolley. Glass and metal, what's the difference?
My PS3 has not even come close to overheating yet. As for cooling, there's not much I can offer that hasn't been said. All I can add is make sure the room is well ventilated as well because if you're PS3 is sucking in nothing but hot air, its own ventilation won't do much good.
I have my PS3 in a large, well-ventilated, well insulated room. As long as I don't keep it in a corner, it stays cool.
Best way to keep it cool and extent the life of your PS3? Connect it to a power bar and turn the power bar off when your not playing. I noticed that the PS3 stays warm while on stand-by so I started to do this.slimdave21Good point. Forgot about that because more often than not I CBF to unplug my PS3 after every use. And I just thought of another thing. Try not to play during the early afternoon period. That's when it gets the hottest I find.
